Un petit tour et puis s’en va. Le dernier signe de vie d’ECITON (ex-INDESPAIR) remonte à 2005, date de sortie de leur unique album, Oppressed. Bien sûr, c’est pas le silence-radio, loin de là. De temps à autre, on a droit à une petite mise à jour sur leur MySpace qui nous dit qu’ECITON « will be back soon ». On attend toujours. C’est pas faute d’avoir été remarqués en plus, leur plus grande victoire étant sans doute celle acquise au « Danish Melo-Death Grand Prix ». Ce qui nous offre un coup de vieux de cinq années, puisque ce succès remonte à 2003. Entre temps, nombreuses sont les choses qui ont évoluées et on aimerait bien savoir où en sont les danois à l’heure actuelle. D’autant qu’Oppressed nous avais laissé dans un flou artistique terrible.
Ce disque, signé sur le label français Adipocere, avait fait l’objet d’une attention toute particulière. Enregistrement au Sound Zone Studios de Copenhague (MINDLOCK, SATURNUS, WUTHERING HEIGHTS) et cover signée Mattias Noren (EVERGREY, MORS PRINCIPIUM EST), ces quelques lignes sont toujours flatteuses sur un curriculum vitae. Seulement, les conclusions tirées de l’essence même du CD sont clairement à même de refroidir quelques ardeurs. Les scandinaves restent fidèles à leur marque de fabrique, livrer un Death Metal brutal sans concession ni réflexion. C’est peut-être le principal défaut d’Oppressed, d’être ainsi balancé dans la fausse aux lions sans même un gourdin pour se défendre. Ah, c’est sûr, ECITON ramone sérieusement les oreilles. Plus une microparticule de cérumen ne peuplera vos conduits auditifs après cette demi-heure de bestialité pure. Les danois dégagent une chaleur et une rage incroyable. Sur la forme, on serait presque à même de croire que la galette fait mouche. Sur le fond, c’est un autre problème. L’entrée en piste est totalement homogène, la sortie aussi. Entre les deux, on attendait une transition qui n’est jamais venue. A peine le temps de remarquer que le seul changement qui existe entre le début et la fin du skeud se situe au niveau de l’intensité, qui va crescendo. Lars Poulsen (batterie) semble avoir pris dix ans d’expérience entre un « Cynical Exploitation Of Mankind » et un « In Good Faith ». L’occasion de constater qu’il manie ses fûts et la double avec dextérité. Et pour le reste, rien de bien nouveau. Ça accélère, ça décélère, ça break, c’est affreusement conventionnel. On regrettera clairement le manque de prise de risque. Tout est axé sur la lourdeur, la puissance, au détriment des arpèges, des harmonies. A ce que je sache, le Brutal Death n’a jamais exclu l’utilisation parcimonieuse de solos. Dommage qu’ECITON en fasse fi, ça nous aurais procuré une ou deux bouffées d’air frais. Au final, seule « Someone Suffer » nous en apporte un peu, avec son tempo cassé et un semblant de mélodie. Le reste n’est que pur martelage rythmique.
Vous l’aurez compris, ECITON manque encore un peu de créativité, de personnalité et d’aisance. Le seul remède à ce problème se situe dans la productivité. Mais faire un petit frère à Oppressed ne semble pas à l’ordre du jour. En tout cas, l’esprit y est ; la preuve cet album est bon. Ou plutôt, il n’est pas mauvais. Dire qu’il ne manque qu’une étincelle…
