Septembre 2007 débarquait chez moi un CD trois titres d’un groupe que je ne connaissais pas : CUBENSIS. Plus qu’une simple démo, ce trois titres mettait en appétit avec trois des morceaux du futur album, Metaphysical Impact. Prévu pour la fin de l’année 2007, ce dernier a été légèrement retardé pour nous arriver enfin dans les mains. Déjà, ce qu’on peut dire c’est que le travail visuel est très bon. On est loin des poncifs Metal habituels et on pourrait presque penser qu’on est devant un nouvel effort de GOJIRA tant le concept lointain de l’artwork pourrait cadrer avec leur univers. Mais non, c’est bien de CUBENSIS qu’il s’agit. Et, je dois bien l’admettre, je trouve la pochette vraiment très belle. Ce visage dessiné avec des constellations me fait tripper.
Sinon, question musique, ça donne quoi ? On retrouve ce qu’on avait déjà pu découvrir, à savoir un Hardcore couillu et technique. Il n’est pas sans faire penser à la musique de TEXTURES. Seulement, là où TEXTURES arrive à pondre des riffs mémorisables dans leur multitude étoffée, CUBENSIS nous pond des rythmiques chiadées où le mot binaire n’a pas trop sa place. Or, parfois, il est bon de se reposer sur des structures moins bancales, histoire de souffler un peu. Et là, cette base stable n’est pas assez présente. Du coup, on se perd un peu facilement dans leurs rythmiques aux mêmes accents. Bien sûr, certains passages ressortent de l’ensemble, notamment sur « Metaphysical Impact » ou bien encore « Reaching Uranus part 1 ». Mais cela ne suffit pas sur la durée de l’album. Etre technique, c’est bien. Etre accessible, c’est pas mal aussi.
Pourtant, tout est là. Le jeu. Le chant. Les riffs. Il suffirait d’un soupçon supplémentaire d’accessibilité pour que l’album soit vraiment excellent et accrocheur. Mais bon, c’est un premier album. Le groupe a le temps de voir pour corriger ses erreurs. Et, pour un premier album, c’est un très bon début.
