De tous les groupes de Metal Gothique, les Allemands de FLOWING TEARS ont toujours été à part. Non pas à cause du décolleté vertigineux de la chanteuse Helen Vogt (qui vaut quand même le détour, entre nous…), mais par la lourdeur caractéristique de sa musique. Les mauvaises langues disent même qu’en comparaison avec d’autres groupes à voix féminine, FLOWING TEARS a la subtilité et la grâce d’un singe en pleine brachiation…
Ces critiques, FLOWING TEARS les essuie notamment depuis qu’Helen Vogt a remplacé Stéphanie Duchêne, et ce à partir de Razorbliss (2004) : la demoiselle a une voix relativement monocorde (attention je n’ai pas dit monotone). Ce qui n’est pas déplaisant pour autant, on évite pour une fois le principe de la voix lyrique qui n’en finit plus... De plus, il faut préciser que Benjamin Buss (guitares, clavier, programmation) est un fan de DEAD CAN DANCE, et donc de Lisa Gerrard : ceci explique donc bien des choses, du choix du recrutement de la Miss Vogt, jusqu’à la sortie de cet album live en acoustique. Ou plutôt semi-acoustique.
FLOWING TEARS prend tout le monde à contre-pied, et force est de reconnaître que l’adaptation de ses titres en version presque « unplugged » lui va comme un gant. Dans une ambiance intimiste et polie, nos quatre amis en profitent pour piocher dans chacun de leurs albums, puisque seuls « Undying » et « Pitch Black Water » sont extraits du dernier opus, et nous gratifient d’une reprise intéressante de SLAYER (« Dead Skin Mask ») qui prend ici une toute autre tournure.
Dans l’ensemble agréable à écouter, InVanity est aussi une occasion à tous les détracteurs de FLOWING TEARS de renforcer leur opinion : quelque part, ça ne décolle jamais, c’est un peu plat … On aime ou on n’aime pas, le fait est qu’un album de ce type sort un peu des sentiers battus et propose un concept intéressant.
A noter que la dernière plage est un titre studio, une reprise de Nick Cave (« The Weeping Song ») sur laquelle Helen chante en duo avec Johan Edlund (TIAMAT).
