Le prolixe Joe Lynn Turner est de retour avec un nouvel album dans la veine de ce que le frontman nous a récemment livré : un Hard Rock mélodique très plaisant. La culture musicale du bonhomme est proprement hallucinante, il faut dire qu’à force d’avoir laissé traîner ses cordes vocales dans une multitude de projets, il commence à connaître du monde. Du coup, les personnes à l’origine de ces nouvelles compositions sont issues d’univers assez différents : Ritchie Blackmore et Roger Glover (« Stroke Of Midnight »), Karl Cochran (Ace Frehley), Jim Peterik, plus une reprise de BONFIRE, « Sweet Obsession ». Il en ressort une œuvre cohérente bien qu’extrêmement variée, à l’image de la personnalité de JLT lui-même. Les riffs Hard Rock de « Over The Top » et « Second Hand Life » côtoient des passages Blues sur « Got Me Where You Want » et même Soul sur « In Your Eyes », tandis que des parfums d’orient embaument l’excellente « Blood Red Sky ». On ne retrouve de telles influences que sur les albums de son ex-comparse, Glenn Hughes.
De la bouche même de Turner, cet opus est un croisement entre The Usual Suspect et Sunstorm. Les connaisseurs savent qu’il s’agit là des meilleurs albums qu’il ait sorti ces dernières années. Et il est vrai que Second Hand Life confirme la bonne forme de JLT.
La production est très soignée, elle s’est employée à donner un son particulièrement orienté 80’s, et là encore, on sent une connaissance et une maîtrise du sujet assez remarquable. C’est flagrant sur « Cruel » et ses chœurs, ou sur les accents très AOR de « Love Is On Our Side » et surtout du morceau bonus, « Two Lights ».
