Plantons de suite le décor. TO-MERA est le nouveau groupe qu’a monté Lee Barrett (basse) autour de la plantureuse chanteuse Julie Kiss (ex WITHOUT FACE). Le premier appelé est le batteur d’origine de WITHOUT FACE, Akos Pirisi. Il est ensuite rejoint par Tom MacLean (guitare) et Hugo Sheppard (clavier). Le groupe a d’abord sortit une démo, bientôt suivie par ce Transcendental.
TO-MERA signifie « Egypte » en ancien égyptien, justement. Les influences orientales se font sentir dès le titre d’ouverture, « Traces » et suivront pendant tout le reste de l’album. Les sept chansons qui suivent mélangent de multiples influences pour délivrer un Metal Progressif riche et coloré. Mais c’est bien là le problème : les compos sont inspirées de groupes et de styles variés et on a parfois l’impression de passer du coq à l’âne. Un même titre peut passer d’un couplet rythmique et saccadé à un passage jazzy pour finir avec un riff Death (je me suis même surpris à attendre quelques growls qui ne sont pas venus, mon dieu suis-je donc pervertit à ce point ?). Je sais, c’est le propre du Prog de diversifier ses compos, mais là un petit peu plus de fluidité n’aurais pas été de trop. Un solo de clavier aux sonorités d’ANDROMEDA, un passage proche de DREAM THEATER, des structures complexes, solos de guitares… on a tous les ingrédients du genre.
Les lignes de chant font vraiment penser par moment au meilleur de LACUNA COIL. Il n’y a pas de soucis la voix de Julie est magnifique. Par contre ses mélodies ne collent pas toujours aux passages les plus complexes.
Transcendental est un très bon album, riche, prenant, avec des riffs excellents. Mais les chansons font souvent penser à un patchwork de styles différents, pas toujours subtilement mélangés, les influences ne sont pas encore totalement digérées. Mais bon, il s’agit de remarques relativement superficielles, TO-MERA est en passe de devenir un excellent groupe qui fera parler de lui. Ce premier album est de très bonne facture, la production est énorme, bref, les amateurs de Metal Prog prendront un pied certain à l’écoute de Transcendental.
