The Burning Halo a tout du nouvel album sans en être un. En effet, pour leur troisième opus chez Napalm Records, les Suédois de DRACONIAN ne nous livrent que trois nouvelles compositions (les trois premiers titres), suivi de réenregistrements de morceaux figurant sur leur démo The Closed Eyes Of Paradise (1999) et de deux covers, mais il faut le reconnaître : le tout est fait avec une classe certaine et soutenu par une production solide.
« She Dies » reprend ce qui fait l'identité du groupe avec une musique qui tend plus volontiers vers la mélancolie que le désespoir, grâce à une forte dose de Goth, avec les vocaux aquilins de Lisa Johansson (qui viennent contrebalancer les grunts d' Anders Jacobsson), une utilisation appuyée du piano et des samples, allant jusqu'à nous proposer des vocaux Goth sur fond de gazouillis d'oiseaux : pour le coup, l'atmosphère se fait plus bucolique que mélancolique. On frôle la faute de goût, mais la lourdeur des riffs sur fond de violons aériens nous rattrape bien vite pour nous replonger dans un océan de larmes d'encre envoûtant.
« Through Infectious Waters », dès son intro, transpire la tragédie avec une mélodie pourtant épique, presque stimulante, un comble pour du Doom. Le chant Death se fait plus agressif, le tout plus Metal avec des ambiances que n'aurait pas renié CRADLE OF FILTH mais aussi des mélodies poétiques à la EROS NECROPSIQUE. Un véritable hymne de tristesse qui nous submerge avec passion.
« The Dying », et ses près de 10 minutes, ne déroge pas à la règle et multiplie les atmosphères, tantôt violentes tantôt plaintives, un tourbillon de sentiments qui illustrerait à merveille le Sturm Und Drank du romantisme allemand.
« Serenade Of Sorrow » et « The Gothic Embrace » s'inscrivent pour leur part dans une veine plus Goth et témoignaient déjà pour une démo du sens de l'arrangement dans l'utilisation du piano, des samples ou des vocaux féminins. « The Morning Star » portait quant à lui les germes d'un style plus varié, plus Metal, avec une accélération Black décoiffante et des violons larmoyants.
Place aux covers avec une reprise, « On Sunday They Will Kill The World » qui ne dénote pas dans la discographie de DRACONIAN et qui nous offre par ailleurs un moment de virtuosité pianistique inspiré du compositeur russe Rachmaninov. « Forever My Queen », en hommage au PENTAGRAM de 1972, clôt l'album sur une note plus Heavy qui, malheureusement, vient rompre l'atmosphère qui se dégageait de The Burning Halo.
The Burning Halo n'en reste pas moins un excellent album de Doom Goth qui vous donne envie de plonger dans le noir…
