Jugeant sans doute que le Heavy mélodique progressif n’avait pas encore été suffisamment exploré, FORGIN’FATE ne fait qu’ajouter son nom à une très longue liste. Comme d’habitude, on revendique les influences de SYMPHONY X et surtout de DREAM THEATER.
Les Français nous livrent ici une œuvre achevée, variée et mature ; l’ensemble est bien maîtrisé mais les défauts classiques, si fréquents dans ce style, peuvent être observés.
En premier lieu, le groupe se complaît dans les changements de structures musicales n’ayant pas forcément de relation entre elles, ce qui fait que certains morceaux ont du mal à accrocher. C’est d’autant plus dommageable que certaines idées sont bonnes mais qu’elles s’embourbent volontiers dans des détours beaucoup moins convaincants. Au final les titres sont dilatés ce qui atténue fortement leur efficacité.
Par ailleurs, la production ne rend pas hommage au soin apporté aux arrangements et à la complexité de l’écriture : le chant reste sur le banc de touche (ce qui est dommage vu que Fabien Barriol est convaincant) tandis que le son est plutôt étouffé. Ce n’est pas dramatique, bien sûr, mais le Metal progressif souffre toujours davantage des limites de budget.
A mon goût le synthé est beaucoup trop présent. Il est vrai que je ne suis pas fan de cet instrument, et les nappes incessantes m’ont gêné. D’autant que certaines sonorités sont franchement cheap comme sur l’intro de “Morphed Into A Beast”.
FORGIN’ FATE signe ici un bon premier album et, même s’il n’y a rien de mémorable, il constitue un point de départ correct pour l’avenir de ce groupe.
