WALTARI est sans doute l’un des groupes les plus difficiles à cerner et à définir. Pour bâtir leur univers musical, les Finlandais ne tournent le dos à aucune influence, aucun style. On a pu se féliciter de cette ouverture d’esprit puisque le groupe nous a livré par le passé de véritables petits joyaux. Hélas, ce Blood Sample part dans trop de directions différentes et perd toute cohérence. On a droit à des titres Pop Metal (“Helsinki” chanté en finlandais et en anglais qui rappelle Guy Marchand (!), “Darling Boy” ou encore “Fly Into The Light”), à du Thrash entrecoupé de Death sur “New York” ou carrément le Brutal Death (si, si) de “Exterminator Warheads”, à du Doom teinté d’Indus avec “Digging Inside”, à des pointes de Hardcore sur “All Roads Will Lead To Rome”, à du Rap sur “I’m In Pain”, à de la guitare acoustique Latino sur “Pigeons”, à de l’Indus sur “Back To The Audio” à du Doom avec “Digging Inside”. Le tout agrémenté d’Indus, de sonneries de portable, de bruitages de radio, des scratches, d’accordéon, de mégaphone et autres gadgets. Ça fait beaucoup.
Bien sûr, aucun des genres musicaux énuméré n’est critiquable mais c’est leur enchaînement qui provoque un contraste indigeste. Le groupe semble très à l’aise avec chacun de ces styles et mérite, sur ce point, des éloges, pourtant on a du mal à s’immerger dans cet univers fait de brics et de brocs. C’est un peu comme faire le tour du monde en 4 jours : on a la tête qui tourne.
