Troisième album du combo Texan, Smoke & Mirrors dépoussière la vieille Harley et nous emmène faire une agréable ballade sur la mythique route 66… On avait déjà été assez charmé par l’opus précédent qui remettait au goût du jour cette bonne vieille vague de Southern Rock à la croisée entre MOTORHEAD et les ZZ TOP. On pouvait seulement reprocher une trop grande linéarité de l’album. Mais là, la donne change. Une sérieuse évolution se fait sentir. DIXIE WITCH réactualise magistralement tout ce qui a pu se faire avant, tout en rajoutant une bonne part de nouveauté. On est tout d’abord surpris pas une intro Rock Garage énergique qui aura pour effet de nous plonger directement dans l’ambiance dynamitée de cet album. Puis on se laissera séduire par des aspects plus Heavy sur « Shoot The Moon » par exemple, mais sans jamais tomber dans l’excès ou la caricature. On remarquera même quelques teintes de vieux Doom à la CANDLEMASS sur « Ballinger Cross ». Et sans oublier les couleurs plus traditionnelles du Southern Rock (Thursday, S.O.L.), c'est-à-dire des riffs bien gras accompagnés d’un chant qui racle bien la gorge. Le tout suintant la bière et le fuel. Grisant… La galette se termine magnifiquement bien avec une ballade instrumentale longue de dix minutes environ. Une pure leçon de groove et de feeling dont la longueur ne se fait ressentir à aucun moment. Une envolée atmosphérique digne des plus grands, avec une guitare expressive à souhait. C’est un régal pour nos petites oreilles, un retour aux émotions brutes des années passées…
Mention spécial pour le batteur qui assure toutes les parties chant. Et je peux vous assurer qu’il y a du lourd, car sortir de telles vocalises du fin fond de sa gorge tout en jouant avec un tel groove, ce n’est pas donné à tout le monde. On notera également la production qui reste bien fidèle à l’univers, rendant un bel hommage au genre, ce qui satisfera les puristes. Merci Joel Hamilton (UNSANE, MIKE PATTON…).
