Je cite. "VOIGHT KAMPFF est un groupe de Thrash Metal français faisant référence à l'univers du film Blade Runner adapté de la nouvelle Les androïdes rêvent-ils de moutons électriques ? de l'auteur de science-fiction Philip Kindred Dick publié en 1968. VOIGHT KAMPFF est le nom du test permettant d'identifier les réplicants (androïdes créés par la Tyrell Corporation) parmi les humains, les premiers étant déclarés hors la loi sur Terre, après leur révolte dans les colonies spatiales". D'emblée, pardonnez cette pantouflardise, mais il n'y a pas meilleur éclairage quant au concept proposé par ces Bretons que leur biographie officielle. Et pour un pauvre humanoïde comme moi, ignorant jusqu'à l'existence d'un film du nom de Blade Runner, c'est une aide salutaire pour mieux comprendre. Les membres de VOIGHT KAMPFF n'apprécieront peut-être pas qu'un vulgaire impie puisse porter un avis sur More Human Than Human, un première album totalement dévoué à l'univers du film de Ridley Scott. Par contre, si la science-fiction est un paysage hostile à mes yeux, le Thrash authentique des Bretons l'est moins à mes oreilles.
Enregistré et mixé au Studio 13 à Quimper par Yvan Le Berre et masterisé par Mathieu Pascal de GOROD, ce premier full-lenght à une silhouette juste impressionnante pour une formation qui, il faut le dire, s'épanouit pour l'heure dans l'obscurité du sous-sol français. Au plus près des racines donc. Et en parlant de racines, certaines ont un nom. CORONER. SLAYER. OVERKILL. EXODUS. Respectant à la lettre la direction musicale fournie par ces grands noms du Thrash, VOIGHT KAMPFF est en 2012 le plus bel hommage qui puisse leur être adressé. Ne parlait-on pas de CORONER après le R.I.P de 1987 comme d'un groupe précurseur, révolutionnaire ? Seize ans après, les Bretons justifient ces éloges, car des compositions sinueuses et techniques comme "Emotional Response", "In The Name Of God" ou encore "World War Terminus" sont le reflet moderne de ce qu'était le Thrash durant les nineties. Le riffing galope aussi vite qu'un canasson qui aurait un plat de carottes Vichy à l'estragon sous le tarin. Autrement dit, accrochez votre string parce que ça va parfois à une vitesse susceptible de concurrencer le groupe de Grind le plus mou. Forcément, on pense à la frénétique "Dangerous Days" ou à la rocambolesque "Tannhäuser Gate" qui propose une chouette synergie entre des vocaux plus limpides et des moments samplés. Par ailleurs, VOIGHT KAMPFF met le paquet sur des ambiances Techno/Thrash de l'hyperespace, ce qui fait clairement partie du business. Même si à cause du dernier MORBID ANGEL, la juxtaposition du terme "Techno" avec n'importe quel autre style de Metal donne des sueurs froides, on n'a pas à s'en faire. Les Bretons se sont juste contentés d'être logiques avec leur concept et les rares incursions de plans futuristes servent avant tout à la cohésion générale d'un disque d'excellente facture. Composé de cinq "instrumentales" (samples en réalité) et de sept morceaux solides et tout sauf pusillanimes, More Human Than Human est une sortie construite, légitime, qui ravira n'importe quel amateur de Thrash old-school lorgnant parfois sur le Death de DEATH et sur la modernité de structures rythmiques version bêta.
"Did you make the test ?". C'est la question que tu m'as directement posé, toi, Zardez, guitariste émérite. Alors je vais te répondre, à toi et à tes compagnons de fortune. Je ne suis pas sûr de vouloir partager cet engouement pour Blade Runner et je ne suis pas sûr de vouloir savoir si dans une vie fictive, je serai effectivement un réplicant. En revanche, au test More Human Than Human, les résultats que vous récoltez sont d'une rare unanimité. Car votre Thrash Metal est torché avec une telle dextérité et une telle régularité (étrangement industrielle) qu'au final, je me demande qui de nous deux est vraiment l'androïde ?
