M-I Interviews du groupe : Tony Kakko (Fév-2003/VF-EV), Tony Kakko et Henrik Klingenberg (Mai-2007/ITW VIDEO)

Metal-Impact.

MI. J'en ai trouvé un [Rires] : les titres des différents morceaux sonnent assez négatifs "Broken", "The ruins of my life"… ?
Tony.

MI.

M-I Interviews : Tony Kakko (Fév-2003/VF-EV), Tony Kakko et Henrik Klingenberg (Mai-2007/ITW VIDEO)

Metal-Impact. Tony, what are the themes of your latest album "Winterheart's Guild" ?
Tony Kakko. It's quite always the same stuff I had with the previous albums. I always try to look out of the window and see what is going on in the world. And the world has changed a lot… No, the themes are quite the same, there's no change…

MI. In relation to your previous albums, I noticed that there was a change [Laugh] : the titles of the different songs sound quite negativ "Broken", "The ruins of my life"… ?
Tony. [Laugh] Yes, it comes from the stress when we made this album. We gave our last show in July 2002 and we entered the studio in September 15th. So we just had 1,5 month to write the album. Ten, we spent 2 months in the studio.

MI. At that time, was your keyboard Miko HARKIN still in the band or had he already left it ?
Tony. No, Miko had left. We didn't want him on this album. He would have like to play on it, but he wouldn't have been on tour with us anymore. So…

MI. But you are still friends, aren't you ?
Tony. We have never really been friends. Miko came late in the band, he was living very far away from us… We weren't very close.

MI. When Miko left, how and why did you choose Henrik KLINKENBERG from REQUIEM ?
Tony. Well, I wrote an ad on our website so that everyone who visit it would see that we were up to it, and could send us a demo. We get demos from all over the world : from South America, France, everywhere… Japan was the only country that didn't. I expected to get a few demos from Japan… but none. I think they are too smart [Laugh] ! Then, we chose 2 players to come to an audition. We wanted to see what these guys were really alike. And Henrik was a real honest person.

MI. When I listened to this album, I noticed that the keyboard was really present. Henrik is very technical and that sounds very good ! Was it a way to stand apart from the other bands or was it just a personal choice ?
Tony. No, this is my thing… really. You know, I'm a keyboard myself, so… That comes naturally, actually I think so. But if you find that it's great, that's cool… very cool [Laugh] !

MI. After your last tour : the Hard Rock Trophées in Paris. Can you draw up your feelings ?
Tony. [Laugh] Well, I was happy ! Of course, it's a bit confusing because you don't expect anything. It's really a great honour. When you get some recognition, from time to time, it proves that there are some fans and professional people who understand and appreciate what we are doing.

MI. You are very appreciate in Finland and in Japan. What about the french public ?
Tony. Well, it was in 2000 when we came for the first time. We first went in Italy, in Spain... People were so aroused… Then we thought that things would cool down a little bit. But no ! Not at all [Laugh] ! So, it was so a big surprise for us. It was so amazing ! And in 2002, we came in Virgin Megastore for an acoustic gig. We expected nobody to be there, that we'll play for the walls [Laugh]. But there was so many people ! It was really amazing !

MI. Will you tour in France this year ?
Tony. Yeah. We heard it yesterday that we'll play 4 or 5 shows in late May. We'll play as headliners and there will be some other bands. I'm so happy to show our new keyboard how excited it is [Laugh] !

MI. Do you already know which bands will play with you as special guests ?
Tony. There will be a french band, a NTS french band. I can't remember the name… Roger ! Roger [Laugh] ! I think it's something like FAIRYLAND, but I'm not that sure.

MI. You recorded live albums just in Japan. Why this choice ?
Tony. Actually, it was made for the Japan market. We thought it was weird to record a live just after 1 or 2 albums. But the Japanese label asked us for it, as we are very popular there. So, it was natural.

MI. Something to say to the Metal-Impact readers ?
Tony. We'll come here in May, apparently [Laugh]. And I want to see everyone of you at the show [Laugh] !
