Si vous cherchez aujourd’hui quelque chose d’original dans le Metal, ne vous arrêtez surtout pas sur CRYSTAL EYES et passez votre chemin. Tout, mais alors TOUT, chez CRYSTAL EYES, est stéréotypé : du nom du groupe jusqu’aux titres des compos (« Ride The Rainbow », « The Devil Inside », « Fighting », etc …) en passant par la pochette. Ah ça non, on ne peut pas dire que CRYSTAL EYES ait inventé quoi que ce soit dans le Heavy Metal. C’est d’autant plus surprenant que CRYSTAL EYES existe depuis 1992 et que Chained ne représente ni plus ni moins que le sixième (!!!) album du combo suédois, qui aurait pu, depuis le temps, chercher un peu à affiner sa personnalité …
Comme souvent dans ces cas là, il suffit d’un élément déterminant pour malgré tout retenir notre attention. Ici, en l’occurrence, c’est la voix de Nico Adamsen, absolument époustouflante de pureté et de puissance. Il n’y a qu’à écouter sa performance sur « The Fire Of Hades » (notamment pendant le break acoustique) pour s’en convaincre. Mais vous allez me dire, un groupe has-been comme METALIUM possède aussi un super chanteur, alors quelle différence ?
D’abord, Fredrik Nordström (DIMMU BORGIR) a donné à ce disque un son et une prod’ simplement énormes, d’où l’impression de ne pas écouter du Heavy trop « daté ». Du coup, CRYSTAL EYES se résume ainsi : c’est carré comme du PRIMAL FEAR, avec des petits airs de GAMMA RAY et des refrains « True Metal » à la HAMMERFALL (sauf sur « The Devil Inside » où ça lorgne sévère sur le Hard Rock). Et puis les gratteux jouiront à chaque double guitare et chaque branlette de manche ultra-mélodique : à ce petit jeu là, le leader Mikael Dahl et Paul Pettersson se révèlent brillants … C’est qu’il n’est pas facile, en 2008, de balancer des solos de guitar-hero sans passer pour un ringard !
Pour revenir à la comparaison avec METALIUM, on va dire que CRYSTAL EYES est sauvé par des compos un poil plus originales (avec juste ce qu’il faut d’inspiration pour faire mieux, mais alors juste juste juste hein ….). A cela près que « Shadow Rider » voit s’accoupler IRON MAIDEN sur les rythmiques et RHAPSODY (OF FIRE) en plein refrain. « Lonely Ball Of Fate » pompe carrément « The Trooper » au niveau des riffs. « Waves Of War » se contente d’un copier/coller sur du GAMMA RAY époque Land Of The Free. Et que dire de la ballade de l’album, chanson folk à deux voix rappelant étrangement BLIND GUARDIAN, et lamentablement nommée … « Guardian » !!!! Hum …
Reste que Chained propose quelques moments de bravoure comme le mid-tempo « The Fire Of Hades », ou encore l’hymne « Fighting ». Et il faut savoir que depuis la sortie de cet opus, l’atout n°1 de CRYSTAL EYES, c'est-à-dire Nico Adamsen, a mis les voiles. Du coup c’est Mikael Dahl qui a repris le micro. A quoi va ressembler CRYSTAL EYES, après ce changement de line-up ? Ben à CRYSTAL EYES pardi ! Qu’il est bien choisi, ce titre d’album : « enchaîné », comme « enchaîné par ses influences » par exemple ?
