Nous sommes aujourd’hui le 29 Mai 2008 et demain sort le troisième album de HOLLENTHON, Opus Magnum (rien à voir avec le détective à moustache roulant en Ferrari). Je vous précise ça d’entrée car il faudra vous jeter dessus. Le Metal extrême fourmille de groupes, de sous-genres et de courants idéologiques. Parfois surgit un combo capable d’assimiler toutes ces particules pour accoucher d’un corps unique à la beauté inédite. Demain, ce sera HOLLENTHON. En d’autres termes, si vous êtes friands de Metal hybride et métissé, cet opus est fait pour vous.
Cette nouvelle offrande, après les prometteurs Domus Mundi (1999) et With Vilest Of Worms To Dwell (2001), ne fait que confirmer la triomphante marche en avant des Autrichiens Martin Schirenc, Mike Gröger, Gregor Marboe et Martin Arzberger. La maturité d’écriture et de performance dont font preuve ces quatre musiciens est tout simplement hallucinante. Absolument TOUT ce que vous allez entendre sur ce disque provient de l’héritage musical métallique, qu’il date de l’an dernier ou de 4 siècles.
D’abord, les orchestrations présentes tout le long d’Opus Magnum ont clairement été inspirées par le grandissime compositeur allemand Richard Wagner. C’est déjà pour cette raison qu’HOLLENTHON a les faveurs de votre serviteur … Enfin un groupe de Metal semble avoir compris la portée de son œuvre. Oubliez RHAPSODY et ses imitations classiques de pacotille, ici on parle de musique romantique et conquérante. Dès les premières notes de « On The Winds Of A Dove », où l’on croirait s’engager dans une folle course poursuite, l’esprit de la Chevauchée des Walkyries n’est pas loin.
Et HOLLENTHON ne s’arrête pas en si bon chemin. Comment ne pas frissonner à l’écoute de ces chants religieux sur « Once We Were Kings », accouplés avec une rythmique Death pur et dur ? Il ne s’agit pas de simples nappes de claviers, HOLLENTHON semble avoir fait appel à un vrai chœur grégorien. Et le résultat est magnifique.
La diversité de ces petits détails enrichissants n’est pas sans rappeler l’audace de DIMMU BORGIR dans le Black, comme cette voix claire sur le lourd et majestueux « To Failed Lands ». C’est d’ailleurs un titre qui m’a aussi évoqué certains passages de la B.O. du « Seigneur des Anneaux » (signée Howard Shore), et notamment l’extrait où Gandalf affronte le Balrog sur le pont de Khazad-Dûm … que de bons souvenirs me direz-vous, d’autant que quelques secondes plus tard un riff typiquement « Maidenien » (en twin guitars) met définitivement le feu …
Autre comparaison qui va vous paraître surprenante. Lorsqu’une voix féminine douce et arabisante introduit le fabuleux « Misterium Babel », difficile de na pas penser à Lisa Gerrard et DEAD CAN DANCE. Ce mélange d’ambiances orientales et de Metal plombé, comme le fait si bien SAMAEL, révèle une autre facette de la personnalité de ce groupe décidément très surprenant.
Néanmoins HOLLENTHON est une entité à part entière, il serait certes impossible de vous citer toutes les références et influences qui ont abouti à ce Opus Magnum, mais à aucun moment on ne surprend un pompage abusif de ce qui a été produit auparavant. Tout est si bien huilé que même en le réécoutant pour la vingtième fois, j’ai encore du mal à m’en remettre. Et j’espère sincèrement que vous ressentirez la même chose.
