La fin des années 80 est l’heure de gloire du « Hair Metal » un mouvement musical vaste, qui va du Hard FM au Glam, pourvu qu’ils aient des permanentes ! Ça marche tellement que les labels sont constamment à la recherche de nouveaux groupes. En 1987 ils dégottent DA VINCI, un combo venu d’Oslo, et signent un premier album au succès convenable. Un second album voit le jour en 1989, il fait ici l’objet d’une réédition remasterisée en 2006.
DA VINCI peut se vanter d’accumuler les clichés. Tout commence avec l’agréable « Touchdown » et ses mélodies d’une incroyable platitude que le groupe a cru bon de noyer sous une tonne de clavier. Cela donne le ton de Back In Business sur lequel les fées de l’originalité ne se sont pas penchées. Certes DA VINCI s’intègre parfaitement au paysage musical de l’époque mais en apportant un minimum créatif qui a certainement nuit à sa notoriété. Des ballades sirupeuses (« Turn Down The Lights », « Young Hearts ») aux titres commerciaux (« Pink Champagne », « Millions Like Us ») en passant par le pathétique « Circus Maximus » et son refrain à pleurer, on n’a pas vraiment l’occasion de crier au génie. Deux titres sortent toutefois du lot : « 9 and 10 », malgré ses paroles proches du zéro absolu, a une mélodie entraînante et un refrain qui rappel POISON. Mais c’est surtout « Hold Back The Tears » qui retient l’attention avec un riff typiquement 80’s et un chanteur qui tente d’imiter Joey Tempest (EUROPE).
En dépit de son absence totale d’originalité, l’ensemble s’écoute agréablement et nous replonge dans une période glorieuse du Metal.
