PRIMAL FEAR a déjà tenté, par le passé, une incursion dans le Metal le plus mélodique, par le biais de morceaux moins rentre-dedans, puissants mais non dénué d'ambiances travaillées, comme "Tears Of Rage" (sur Primal Fear) ou "The Healer" (sur Devil's Ground). Avec Seven Seals, la bande de Mat Sinner et Ralf Scheepers se décide enfin à franchir le pas, et à approfondir cette voie. De leur propre aveu, cela fait des mois qu'ils y pensent mais on ne s'extirpe pas si facilement du Heavy Metal à l'allemande ...
Dans son entreprise, PRIMAL FEAR fait appel à Charlie Bauerfeind, expert en la matière et producteur de groupes au répertoire plus "riche", comme BLIND GUARDIAN ou ANGRA. Nul doute que derrière sa console, Bauerfeind sait orienter les choix de Mat Sinner dans le bon sens. Ainsi, le mid-tempo "Seven Seals" symbolise cette évolution, disposant d'une orchestration magistrale et d'une trame musicale peu commune pour le Metal Commando. On pourrait aussi citer "Diabolus", qui bénéficie du même traitement, le tout dans un climat encore plus envoutant.
Reste que PRIMAL FEAR a concentré tous ses efforts sur cette nouvelle orientation, car là où le bât blesse, c'est lorsque le quintet retombe dans ses travers et se contente du minimum syndical, au gré de titres bourrins, dont on devine l'efficacité sur scène, mais ô combien prévisibles ("Carniwar", "Rollercoaster"). Les rythmiques sont appuyées, mais même un fan de METALIUM n'est pas sûr d'y trouver son compte... Certes, il y a bien ce "The Immortal Ones" et son refrain qui fait mouche, ou encore "Question Of Honour", idéalement amené par une superbe intro et jouissif de bout en bout, mais cela ne suffit pas. Alors forcément, la moitié de Seven Seals semble servir de remplissage autour d'une nouvelle approche beaucoup plus intéressante. Et puis, au sujet de "Question Of Honour", il faut préciser que cette compo n'a rien d'inédite, c'est simplement une reprise de ... SINNER, écrite par Mat Sinner et Tom Naumann !! Question d'honneur peut-être, question d'originalité on ne se prononcera pas, et c'est fort dommage quand on tient là l'un des tous meilleurs passages de l'album.
Encore une fois, ce nouvel album de PRIMAL FEAR n'efface pas les éternelles questions sur la capacité du groupe à évoluer, puisque finalement, il se retrouve le cul entre deux chaises. Quelque part, entendre PRIMAL FEAR exceller sur du Metal mélodique, et échouer lamentablement sur ses propres terres, était un phénomène à prévoir, bien que surréaliste ... Alors que faire : persévérer dans la voir tracée par "Sevens Seals", ou revenir à des racines plus brutes ?
A noter que Seven Seals existe en version digipack, avec deux titres en bonus dont un "Higher Power" beaucoup plus traditionnel pour PRIMAL FEAR, le genre de morceau qui fait taper du pied. A l'ancienne, en fait ...
