Appelant au monolithisme via titre et pochette de son premier album, FURTHER DIMENSION s'expose déjà aux idées reçues les plus détestables. Cet album sera-t-il le bloc compact, de granit ou de marbre, qui se dresse fièrement sur ce paysage lunaire ? Pour le savoir, il faudra embarquer à bord de leur station spatiale, puisque ces francs-comtois ont prévu de nous faire voyager loin, très loin, au travers d'un premier full-lenght à réaction. Composé de quatre charmants garçons ayant écumé la scène hexagonale au sein de groupes comme ALKEMYST, DEAD SEASON, UNCOLORED WISHES, FURTHER DIMENSION, avec ses faux airs de SYMPHONY X en mode anticipation, remballe d'emblée l'idée d'un banal Metal progressif et futuriste, avec une foule de détails qui font de The Monolith Effect une œuvre passionnante dès la première seconde de "Dawn Of Humanity".
Introduction, transition, conclusion. Il y a sur ce disque une façon de créer qui se rapprocherait presque du cinéma. Sauf qu'il s'agit bien de musique et que même sans les images, FURTHER DIMENSION génère pléthore de rêves. Pour bien démarrer, partons sur la base d'un Heavy Metal stratosphérique, avec une pointe de progressisme mais pas trop. Gardons des riffs solides, des rythmiques galopantes, une production béton et même quelques senteurs de Death Metal ("Middle Age", "Greed"). C'est leur base, sur laquelle viennent se greffer d'innombrables harmonies stellaires et surtout, la voix envolée de l'excellent Julien Jacquemond, se fendant également de vocaux plus profonds qui permettent à l'album de conserver une étiquette définitivement Metal sur toute sa durée. La folie de STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, la poésie d'OPETH, la force de frappe de MASTODON, la technique de TOOL, FURTHER DIMENSION est un amalgame profond et épuré de ces quelques références, qui ressurgissent toutes à différents moments de l'opus sans se l'approprier. Bien sur, The Monolith Effect est particulièrement long et dense, ce qui n'empêchera pas un morceau de neuf minutes comme "Further Dimension" de s'épanouir. Mais là où le quatuor a vraiment frappé fort, c'est sur ce triptyque quasi-final, décomposé en trois personnalités fortes que son "The Monolith Effect Pt I" (Heavy bourru et galopant), "Pt II" (idem, mais avec des ombrages Death, Djent et des roulements de batterie intenses) et "Pt III" (Heavy traditionnaliste sur le début, épique sur la fin). Un trio tout sauf monolithique, qui vient ponctuer ce premier opus de la plus belle des façons. C'en est presque dommage pour "On The Way Back To Earth", la vraie conclusion de cette œuvre, apaisante, enivrante, comme si on ne s'était pas suffisamment imbibé de ce Heavy progressif durant une heure.
FURTHER DIMENSION ne pouvait rêver à des premiers pas plus dignes pour un groupe qui démarre dans le circuit. Professionnel à tous les niveaux, en plus d'être pertinent sur le plan artistique, The Monolith Effect rompt totalement avec le cliché du disque de Heavy Prog échevelé, incompréhensible, sorti tout droit de l'esprit marginal d'un poète rimbaldien. Aussi fascinant qu'accessible, ce n'est pas une œuvre majeure, ça ne le sera jamais, mais si vous saviez comme on s'en contente.
