THE MIDNIGHT GHOST TRAIN est un power trio américain qui a commencé comme un hommage. Celui que Steeve Moss rend à son meilleur ami John Goff. Lorsque John décède en août 2007, le futur leader de TMGT prend la décision de créer un groupe en mémoire de son ami. Il lâche son boulot d'enseignant, recrute un bassiste et un batteur et commence à jouer. L'histoire est en marche. Un premier EP, The Johnny Boy est édité en 2008, suivi l'année d'après d'un album éponyme. Pressés en petite série, ils sont aujourd'hui introuvables.
En 2012, le groupe a forgé son identité musicale et se prépare à enregistrer un nouvel effort. C'est un trio réunissant Steeve Moss (chant, guitare), Brandon Burgham (batterie) et David Kimmell (basse) qui s'enferme en studio pour travailler sur Buffalo.
Authenticité et puissance sont les lignes directrices de la galette.
L'authenticité, pour restituer dans un disque l'ambiance des concerts. Le skeud est enregistré live sur bandes analogiques. TMGT s'est forgé sur scène, le gang veut que son méfait sonne live. Le son crade donne à Buffalo un côté bootleg. Du souffle, de la poussière, du grain et même le parquet qui grince sous le talon des musiciens ("Cottonfield").
La puissance, quant à elle, explose dès les premières notes. Une guitare sauvage, nerveuse qui laisse traîner ses notes pour faire gronder l'ampli avant de plaquer des riff rapides et saturés comme sur "Tom's Trip" ou "Spacefaze". Elle est doublée par une basse un peu en retrait. La batterie est en revanche très présente dans le mix. Le batteur développe un jeu tantôt sec, tantôt glissant, très groovy. Mais TMGT ne serait pas TMGT sans les performances de vocaliste de Steeve Moss. Car le groupe peut être bon, sur Buffalo, c'est le chant qui apporte cette couleur particulière. C'est un genre de cri de gorge, rocailleux et rond à la fois.
Il y a dans cette musique une espèce de spontanéité viscérale qui ne s'explique que par la symbiose entre les musiciens. C'est le résultat d'heures à jouer et rejouer les morceaux pour pouvoir les sortir avec cette précision et cette complétude sur l'enregistrement studio.
Buffalo a reçu le prix du meilleur album Stoner de 2012 par Heavy Planet Magazine. TMGT se défend de jouer du Stoner, qualifiant son travail de Heavy Blues. Quel que soit son nom, leur musique vous prend aux tripes. Elle vous habite et vous accompagne comme le souvenir résiduel d'un grand vin, d'un bon café, d'un bon cigare. Ce qui a commencé comme l'hommage à un ami disparu est en train de devenir un groupe incontournable pour les amateurs de musiques Heavy de toutes obédiences.
