Avec Hawkdope, on dirait bien que les italiens de BLACK RAINBOWS ont retrouvé la recette de la potion magique ! Le nouvel album du power-trio transalpin est un mix (d)étonnant de Heavy catchy et de psychédélisme perché. Un savant chaud-froid où les grosses baffes bétonnées sont compensées par des échappées stratosphériques. Avec ce cocktail Fuzz explosif, les romains nous en font voir de toutes les couleurs.
"Holy Moon s’inscrivait dans une veine psychédélique. Et je pense que nous nous dirigeons de plus en plus dans cette voie" explique Gabriele Fiori le chanteur guitariste et fondateur du groupe (Rockhard n°152). Et en effet, en les écoutant a posteriori, les chansons de l’EP Holy Moon "Monster of the highway", "The Hunter" et "Holy Moon" annoncent Hawkdope.
Sans abandonner l’univers Stoner qui les définit depuis leur premier méfait, Twilight in the Desert, les arcs-en-ciel noirs font donc une fois de plus évoluer leur musique. Carmina Diabolo était très Stoner old-school, Supermothafuzzalicious, plus Rock n’Roll. Aujourd’hui, ils proposent ce méchant cocktail de Heavy Stoner Psychédélique comme savait le faire le MONSTER MAGNET d'avant Powertrip. C’est à dire : grosse guitare, vagues de motifs psyché, voix rentre dedans et longues plages instrumentales et atmosphériques. On retrouve tout çà dans le CD. Les italiens restituent l'ambiance mais ils y mettent leurs ingrédients à eux.
Et en parlant de psychédélisme, l’artwork de Luca Solomacello représentant un aigle volant à travers les volutes sanglantes s’échappant d’un crâne qu’il tient entre ses serres, le tout sur fond rose fushia. Cela donne le ton. Il en va de même avec la tracklist bourrée de titres suggestifs "No Fuel, no Fun", "Hypnotize My Soul With Rock n’roll", "Killer Killer Fuzz", "The Cosmic Picker".
Le contenu tient les promesses du contentant. Il envoie du bois (de santal) ! Comme d’habitude la tracklist mélange les ambiances soufflant le chaud et le froid pour ménager la monture. Tous les morceaux offrent quelque chose, riff catchy ("The Prophet", "Wolf Eye", "Jesusjudge"), délire instrumental psychédélique ("Hawkdope", "The Cosmic Picker") et le plus souvent tout à la fois, dans un maelstrom de sensations.
Cet opus ne révolutionne pas le genre mais offre un beau voyage en terre Stoner avec une formation qui sait jouer sur la corde vintage revival sans tomber dans la bouffonnerie. Une musique qui fait penser aux années 70, à des combi Wolkswagen, des manifestations pacifistes, des robes à fleurs, des pantalons patte d’éléphant, des fumerolles d’encens et des filles avec des fleurs dans les cheveux.
