Shining, çà vous parle ? Vous voyez les deux soeurs jumelles qui hantent les couloirs de l'hôtel ? Essayez de les imaginer chantant une comptine. Vous visualisez ? Ben c'est à çà que me fait penser l'intro de "The Saddest Call", le morceau qui ouvre Hope///Dope///Rope. Remarquez, avec un titre pareil on se doute bien que le groupe de Stoner parisien HANGMAN'S CHAIR n'a pas décidé de nous emmener au pays de Oui-Oui !
Vous l'aviez sans doutes compris dès l'artwork de la galette, avec son camé tatoué sur fond de Pigalle glauque, genre de caricature dark de Poulbot. Un dark Poulbot de Montmartre.
Ce sentiment s'est confirmé quand vous avez envoyé la musique. Elle reste dans cette sombre logique, car c'est une véritable descente aux enfers que cet opus. On pourrait parler de concept album : il y a une progression narrative, une suite qui correspond au titre de l'album. L'espoir, puis la drogue, puis la pendaison. Il y a clairement un crescendo mais si les aspects rope et dope sont bien rendu, la partie hope est plus ténue. Disons que le Doom Metal des franciliens restitue mieux le désespoir que l'espoir.
Une tracklist à base de morceaux de 6 minutes et plus pour installer une ambiance lourde et glauque.
"Ain't Living Long Like That" propose un riff plombé et englué dans le goudron. Cette musique pèse des tonnes. Avec la voix distante, qu'on croirait chantée du fonds de la cave. Susurrée, la piste vocale est mise en léger retrait par rapport à la basse. La gratte joue sur un registre tellement pesant qu'on le sent sur les genoux. Ecrasant. "December" s'annonce un peu moins pessimiste. Quelque chose dans la mélodie des cordes, comme si un espoir venait illuminer quelque peu ce monde si sombre. C'est la batterie qui tient le tempo avec un rythme très appuyé à la grosse caisse qui remonte en surcouche sur tout le morceau. On l'entend particulièrement clairement.
"A Scar To Remember" replonge dans la basse dure, le tempo lento, très très lento, une batterie très cymbale et un chant beaucoup plus engagé et désespéré. Un cri. Une souffrance. Les cordes sont très distordues et jouent sur une partition en décalé avec la voix.
Chaque piste aborde une nouvelle facette, un nouvel aspect. Une variation de thème. Elles arrivent toute à installer un climat différent. Le groupe maîtrise ce travail sur les ambiances, entre répétions d'un thème et jeu sur des micro-variations.
La production et le mixage sont très bons. Le travail de dosage des instruments en fonction de l'ambiance recherchée est remarquable.
Vous aimez le Doom Metal ? Les ambiances distillées sur la durée ? Les musiques pessimistes ? Cet album est pour vous. C'est une perle de goudron sertie sur un anneau de chanvre. Celui dans lequel on passe sa tête avant de donner un coup de pied dans le dossier de la chaise. La chaise du pendu, HANGMAN'S CHAIR.
