C’était leur dernière chance. Je m’étais juré que par tous les dieux, jamais plus jamais je ne ferais subir à ma chaîne stéréo la torture insoutenable d’un disque de TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED. Puis j’ai craqué. Par curiosité sans doute. Et finalement, parce j’avais l’infime espérance que pour une fois, la troisième me concernant, la pomme tomberait à des lieues du pommier. Eternel insatisfait, pinailleur de première et surtout, incapable de comprendre de but en blanc la passion vorace vouée à ce groupe anglais, j’ai failli dans mon infinie volonté. Degenerate est mien et je suis condamné à en parler car pour la première fois de ma vie, tel un jeune puceau tout heureux de voir pousser ses poils pubiens, j’ai repris espoir en TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED. Comme quoi, l’Histoire avec un grand H et mon histoire à moi, avec un petit h, sont loin d’être des antagonistes. « La Der des Der », ça vous inspire quelque chose ?
Amas grossier de sonorités bruitistes, incohérences perpétuelles, problème d’organisation, les vieux démons qui hantent ma mémoire se sont fait une joie de tomber le voile. Chassés, à ma grande surprise, par un disque qui en réserve quelques unes. Plus question de Deathcore teinté de Grind. TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED, dans sa folle progression en est arrivé à un stade où la bouteille acquise l’a guidé sur la voie du Brutal Death technique. Dan Wilding d’ABORTED a pris place derrière la batterie. Et son immense expérience en matière de bourrinage ne fait qu’accroître la bestialité innée de la bande, dans le bon sens cette fois. C’est autre chose que Max Blunos qui, sans vouloir lui faire offense, peut retourner roucouler avec Sarah Jezebel Deva. Les compositions sont dynamiques mais juste ce qu’il faut. Exit l’exubérance et les clowneries (ou conneries, c’est selon), les rosbifs envoient le pudding ! Le changement est prodigieux, presque invraisemblable. Pourtant, c’est bien le même groupe, avec le même frontman et cette même envie de tout dévaster sur son passage. Jonny Burgan fait des merveilles au micro. Autant sur The Great Depression, il accompagnait bêtement le reste du troupeau, autant là, le monsieur se démarque vraiment de ses copains avec un feeling plaisant et une voix caverneuse qui viendrait presque à rappeler sur quelques passages (« A Sterile Existence » notamment) un certain… Legion (ex-MARDUK) ! C’est dire s’il y’en a sous le capot. Les solos ne sont plus effectués aussi machinalement, ils possèdent une âme, ils apportent chacun un sens précis à la chanson qu’ils illustrent, et en particulier à « The Soulful Dead » qui part dans milles directions différentes mais toutes plus intelligentes les unes que les autres. Alors ce n’est pas parfait, loin de là mais après toutes les galères et tous ces artifices qui m’ont forgé une mauvaise opinion du groupe, Degenerate aurait du être l’ultime soupir pour des anglais morts et enterrés depuis longtemps. Je suis dégouté car j’avoue avoir d’autres chats à fouetter que d’écrire des chroniques élogieuses sur des déceptions passées. Mais là, avec un effort aussi convaincant qu’inattendu, je ne pourrais nullement fermer les yeux sur leur prochaine sortie. Chassez le naturel, il revient au galop.
Et si à l’avenir, TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED pouvait penser à aérer davantage ses compositions, à réduire leur aspect synthétique, lapidaire et à y incorporer « the » truc en plus qui rend l’œuvre mémorable, je reconnaitrais publiquement que mes critiques quant à l’absence de talent et de futur musical du groupe ainsi que mes pensées les plus haineuses les concernant étaient injustes. Ces quelques conseils sont les seules faits notables manquants à Degenerate pour en faire un opus magistral.
