Depuis des années EIDOLON frappe sans toucher, enregistre sans convaincre ; qu’on en juge : malgré cinq albums passés, le groupe reste désespérément confidentiel. Je ne connais que leurs trois précédents albums et il faut avouer que si EIDOLON a beaucoup de qualités, il manquait quelque chose afin de les rendre intéressants et attractifs.
Cet “Apostle Of Defiance” marque un certain changement dans l’orientation musicale des canadiens, davantage charmés par le Heavy Metal que le Thrash qu’ils nous proposaient jusque-là. Même si la double grosse caisse laboure avec régularité et si les riffs sont musclés, les compositions sont plus posées et l’ensemble y gagne en conviction. Toujours très proche de TESTAMENT (période “Practice What You Preach”) ou de NEVERMORE, le groupe a du mal à être aussi convainquant et surtout à communiquer ses émotions avec le même succès, mais parvient à progresser sensiblement. Ainsi “Twisted Morality” est parfaitement dosée dans un registre auquel le groupe ne nous avait pas habitué ; et surtout le titre éponyme avec son intro à tomber et ses passages de vocaux “death” très réussis (quel l’on retrouve aussi sur “Volcanic Earth ”).
EIDOLON vient enfin de nous mettre l’eau à la bouche grâce à cet agréable mélange Heavy/Thrash de bonne facture.
