Près de trente ans après sa formation, PRETTY MAIDS fait figure de taulier sur la scène Hard Rock. Plutôt effacé depuis quelques années, la faute au dépôt de bilan de leur précédent label, et à des albums plutôt moyens, le groupe semble revenir en force sous l'impulsion d'une jeunesse retrouvée et de Frontiers Records...
Quatre ans après Wake Up To The Real World, Ronnie Atkins et Ken Hammer ont décidé d'injecter un peu de sang neuf et d'intégrer de façon permanente Morten Sandager (clavier), tout juste évincé de MERCENARY. Et son apport est indéniable dès les premières notes du morceau éponyme. PRETTY MAIDS qui a basé son style sur l'importance d'éléments mélodiques tels la voix ou le clavier, renoue ainsi avec ses premiers amours. On alterne ici morceaux agressifs et rapides, rythmiques façon bulldozer et guitares rentre-dedans (« One World One Truth », « It Comes At Night » ou « Cielo Drive ») avec des hymnes pop-rock très efficaces aux refrains gentillets faciles à retenir (« Little Drops Of Heaven » ou « Final Day Of Innocence »). Symboles de cette diversité, les vocaux de Ronnie Atkins tantôt clairs tantôt rauques, font toujours merveille. Le bonhomme ne semble pas avoir perdu en puissance ou en amplitude, depuis les beaux jours de Future World ou Red Hot And Heavy. La même polyvalence est à souligner du côté de la section rythmique, ou Allan Tschicaja (ex-ROYAL HUNT, KINGDOM COME) s'est incontestablement fait son trou, et où la double-pédale endiablée côtoie les mid-tempos moins bourrins. Il y en a pour tout le monde sur Pandemonium, du Heavy Rock classique (« Beautiful Madness ») aux power balades bluesy telle « Old Enough To Know », PRETTY MAIDS nous montre qu'il maîtrise toujours à merveille cette palette élargie qui a fait son succès. Le tout est mixé de main de maître par Jacob Hansen qui confirme le savoir-faire unique des scandinaves en la matière, pour un résultat assez convaincant.
De nouveau sur les bons rails, le quintet danois fera son retour sur scène lors des festivals d'été. L'occasion de savoir s'il supporte le poids des ans et soutient la comparaison avec la nouvelle vague. Mais on peut aisément supposer que ces « jolies serveuses » ont encore de belles années devant elles...
