S’il y a bien un style de Metal qui a su se diversifier ces dernières années, n’en déplaise aux puristes, c’est bien le Black. Du True Black Metal, on est passé au Black Metal symphonique ou encore le Pagan Black Metal. Fort de son passé guerrier, festif et aux forts accents celtes, la France n’est pas en reste. FUNERAL DAWN officie donc dans ce que le groupe appelle lui-même un « Black Metal médiéval ».
Tout au long de cette démo cinq titres (« Land Of Shadows », « On The Lands Of Ankou », « The Knight’s Return », « Forgotten Landscapes part II » et « Apocalypse »), le Black Metal pur souche côtoie sans scrupules chants lyriques féminins, violons et autres flûte traversière. Pas moins de huit musiciens s’attèlent à proposer ce Black varié et ambiant, notamment sur « The Knight’s Return » qui a retenu mon attention, de par ses changements de rythme fréquents et témoin de la richesse musicale de FUNERAL DAWN.
Reste que même sur 5 titres, on saute du coq (Metal extrême) à l’âne (airs folkloriques) de façon un peu brute, sans trame vraiment évidente. Après tout, c’est ce qui différencie un groupe pagan passé maître de l’art et un combo au stade de la démo. Mais pas d’inquiétudes amis gaulois, sortez nous 8 titres de la trempe de « The Knight’s Return » et on assistera à un petit évènement. Un petit reproche sur la pochette cependant : le froid glacial qu’elle inspire évoque plutôt le Black Metal de BURZUM et DARKTHRONE.
Alors comme on le dit si bien à l’accoutumée : à suivre …
