Nouvelle réédition du label Metal Mind pour un album sorti initialement en 2005 sur Empire Records, Day Before The End est pour le moins catchy. En effet, les Polonais s'y entendent en matière de riffs techniques, mais rapidement entêtants, à la mesure de leurs aînés de la scène Death mélodique de Göteborg, même si les guitares sonnent ici nettement plus Thrash avec un TOTEM évoquant d'ailleurs par moments MACHINE HEAD. La formation présente en outre la particularité d'avoir deux vocalistes, masculin et féminin, tout en nous épargnant la traditionnelle opposition entre la Belle et la Bête, le sieur Auman empruntant à un registre proche de celui de Max Cavalera, tandis que la gente Weronika s'inscrit dans celui d'Angela Grossow. Et c'est tant mieux car les quelques passages voix claire ne sont pas des plus convaincants (« Taste Of Life »). Si le groupe opte principalement pour un Thrash mid tempo, il compense cette linéarité par un réel travail au niveau des compos, qui ne se contentent pas d'enchaîner les riffs mais parviennent à créer de réelles ambiances que ce soit par l'intermédiaire de claviers que DIMMU BORGIR n'aurait probablement pas reniés (« The Rage », « Lost Dimension »), que de murmures schizophrènes (« The Rage ») ou encore de mélodies orientales (« Lost Dimension »). J'évoquais plus haut les riffs, mais les solos ne sont pas en reste (« Merry Go Round »), de même que la section rythmique, avec notamment une basse mise en avant quand et comme il se faut par une production sans accroc. TOTEM parvient même à recréer des ambiances sur « For » qui, ô comble du raffinement pour votre serviteur, auraient pu trouver leur place dans le score d'un John Rambo. Décidément, le potentiel Metal de la scène polonaise, dans toute son étendue, mérite toute notre attention. Et pour cela, nous pouvons compter sur Metal Mind pour déterrer des mines de Pologne de véritables pépites.
