En 1998, ICED EARTH a réalisé un album appelé Something Wicked This Way Comes où les 3 derniers morceaux servent de départ à la trilogie « Something Wicked ». Une trilogie créée par le leader du groupe Jon Schaffer. Ce nouvel opus Framing Armageddon –Something Wicked Part 1- est donc la suite des 20 minutes enregistrées en 1998. Ce concept tourne autour d’une histoire de science-fiction avec invasion d’extra-terrestres menaçant l’humanité où la musique est bourrée d’arrangements sophistiqués et épiques. Cette œuvre musicale est ambitieuse et sera suivi de l’autre volet dans quelques mois, au printemps de l’année 2008.
Pour resituer cet album, il arrive quelques années après le controversé The Glorious Burden le premier album avec Tim Ripper Owens au chant. Framing Armageddon a pour but de redonner toutes ses lettres de noblesses à ICED EARTH. Il faut dire qu’avec Horror Show le groupe avait frappé fort et le nom de ICED EARTH était devenu un gage de qualité.
Doté d’un visuel d’une qualité irréprochable, autant dire que nouveau disque est attendu ! Il faut dire que Jon et les siens n’ont pas faits les choses à moitié : mélange de chœurs, chants doublés, guitares heavy, acoustiques, violons, percussions… pourtant le début de l’album est difficile à apprécié : d’un rythme assez lent et heavy, il faut attendre le titre « Ten Thousand Strong » pour retrouver enfin le grand ICED EARTH. Les nombreux interludes nécessaires au concept peuvent agacer mais les orchestrations font qu’elles se fondent dans le moule. Ce qui semble dérangeant au début devient naturel ensuite.
Framing Armageddon est mené d’une voix de maître par Time Owens qui réalise là un travail remarquable : cet homme sait tout faire et peut évoluer dans tous les registres. Pourtant ICED EARTH semble tourner au ralenti, il n’y a que peu de morceaux rapides ou marquants. Tout est basé sur des orchestrations et la musique très sophistiquée des compositions, rien que le couple « Overture » et « Something Wicked – part 1 » pose les bases d’un album solide. Quand même une chose me dérange tout au long du skeud : où est passé la puissance de ICED EARTH ? Tout semble trop léché, trop propre, trop pure… cela vient-il de la production, du mixage ? À chacun son opinion…
Framing Armageddon est un album dure, difficile d’accès, dément, et qui demande un bon nombre d’écoute pour en saisir les richesses. Il est à écouter d’une seule traite comme le veut le concept…
