Deux ans après leur premier album éponyme, BODY COUNT remet le couvert pour un deuxième album. Malgré les faiblesses de leur premier album, les membres du premier groupe de Gansta Thrash avait su créer l’intérêt autour d’eux et se faire de vrais fans parmi les métalleux de tous bords. Aussi, il était naturel d’attendre beaucoup de leur deuxième album. Les attentes ont-elles été contentées ? C’est ce que nous allons voir.
Tout d’abord, la première chose qui frappe à la première écoute, c’est la production. Bien meilleure qu’elle ne l’était, on sent qu’on a donné un peu plus de moyens à Ice T et sa bande. Et on ne va pas s’en plaindre. La deuxième chose, c’est que maintenant, la batterie ressemble à quelque chose. Parce que sur Body Count, Beatmaster V avait beau s’échiner, on avait l’impression qu’il venait juste d’apprendre à jouer. Il n’est pas devenu un batteur de Metal accomplie sur Born Dead, mais on sent quand même une nette progression. Ou bien est-ce simplement la production qui donne cette impression ? Je vous laisse juge.
Et les morceaux dans tout ça ? « Body M/F Count » est dans la pure veine d’un « Body Count’s In The House » ou d’un « Body Count Anthem » : un hymne du groupe à reprendre en chœur pendant les concerts en même temps que le maître Ice T. Peu de paroles, toujours les mêmes, et une rythmique simple, régulière, mais qui donne envie de se bouger et de scander cette chanson avec toutes ses tripes. Puis arrive « Masters Of Revenge ». Et là on se demande où sont passé les tempos assez rapides du groupe. Parce qu’on est dans un trip plutôt doom. Etonnant. Mais bon, c’est aussi sympa de varier les plaisirs, non ? Sur Born Dead, on a donc du bon et du moins bon. Des titres comme « Shallow Grave » ou « Born Dead » déchirent tout sur leur passage. Par contre, on se demande l’utilité d’un titre comme « Drive By ». Il y a de bonnes choses dedans, mais pas assez pour faire un morceau entier. Comme si les gars n’avaient pas pris le temps de terminer leur boulot. Et puis il y a « Surviving The Game » avec son riff très SLAYER. Un hommage ? Peut-être bien. Il ne faut pas oublier qu’Ice T avait fait un titre avec eux pour la bande originale du film Judgment Night, « Disorder ».
A la fin de l’écoute, on est quand même content, même si on ne retient pas tous les titres. Certains restent gravés dans les mémoires. D’autres s’oublient aussi rapidement qu’on les a écoutés. Et puis il y a ce « Hey Joe », reprise de Hendrix, qui fait un peu bizarre au milieu de tout ça. L’ensemble, est tout de même une bonne suite. Peut-être pas aussi bonne qu’on aurait pu l’espérer, mais qui ne se jette pas non plus.
