CRADLE OF FILTH a toujours divisé la communauté Metal, avec d’un côté, ceux qui pensent que le groupe a vendu son âme au Diable, de l’autre, ceux qui pensent que c'est au marketing et au merchandising que le groupe a fait allégeance. Ceux qui pencheraient pour la deuxième hypothèse devront au moins admettre qu’avec Thornography, le groupe prend un risque réel en proposant un album qui va à l’encontre de ce que l’on pouvait attendre d’eux, d’où la nécessité de l’écouter plusieurs fois afin de l’appréhender avec un minimum d’objectivité. CRADLE OF FILTH affirme en effet avec ce nouvel album son propre style, non pas un Black Metal Symphonique mais bien un Heavy Black Extrême.
L’intro orchestrale « Under Pregnant Skies She Comes » ouvre la danse avec des couleurs plus chaudes qu’à l’accoutumée, quasi burtoniennes.
« Dirge Inferno » déboule ensuite avec son Black violent et un groove appuyé à travers ses breaks à la basse et des riffs acides à la MARDUK. Dès ce titre, Paul Allender (guitares) s’affiche comme un élément majeur de la formation, les orchestrations étant nettement en retrait et ce, sur l’ensemble de l’album.
Ce qui surprend sur Thornography, c'est l’absence de concept album auquel le groupe nous avait habitués et pourtant les titres se suivent avec cohérence et à ce niveau, Paul Allender joue un rôle essentiel puisque, par ses riffs, lorgnant plus volontiers vers le Thrash que par le passé, et ses mélodies vénéneuses (« Tonight In Flames », « Libertina Grimm »), il assure le fil conducteur entre toutes ces compos.
La musique de CRADLE se veut plus directe, plus variée aussi, même sur les titres longs – minoritaires sur Thornography – le groupe néglige les arrangements symphoniques au profit d’une musique plus Metal, plus groovy, d’autant que le chant de Dani se fait moins haut perché qu’auparavant. A ce titre, les blasts ne sont pas légions sur cet album, le combo privilégiant les mid tempos lourds (« The Byronic Man », « Cemetery And Sundown »).
Outre cette « ré-orientation » musicale plutôt convaincante, déjà initiée sur Damnation And A Day et Nymphetamine – et même si certains titres comme « Under Huntress Moon » ou encore « I Am The Thorn » restent plus classiques dans la discographie du groupe –, CRADLE s’essaie à quelques expérimentations qui feront sans doute grincer quelques dents (comme la présence de Ville Valo, chanteur de HIM, sur « The Byronic Man », la reprise d’un hymne Electro Pop, « Temptation », agrémenté à la sauce CRADLE mais qui dénote toutefois avec le reste, et une instrumentale « Rise Of The Pentagramm », assez dispensable, d’autant plus qu’elle met en avant la faiblesse de la production au niveau de la batterie, une constante sur l’ensemble de l’album), mais CRADLE ne serait rien sans ses détracteurs.
En définitive, on saluera l’audace du groupe qui, malgré 15 ans de carrière et une renommée qui n’est plus à faire, ose encore surprendre en imprimant encore plus profondément sa griffe dans la face du Metal actuel.
