Je vais planter rapidement le décor. THE ALIEN BLAKK est le projet d’un « grand » guitariste nommé Joshua Craig. Déjà, ça ne sent pas très bon. Quand un technicien d’un instrument sort un album solo, on s’attend plus à une démonstration technique qu’à de la vraie musique. Après une écoute… Pas manqué, c’est bien ça, de la démonstration sans saveur. Mais vous vous demandez, qui donc est ce Joshua Craig ?
Né à Boston, le petit Joshua a appris à jouer de la guitare tout jeune. Développant rapidement une bonne technique, il devient alors « Session Musician ». Ce bon vieux Joshua décrète alors qu’à Los Angeles, le travail sera plus prolifique. Et puis ça tombe bien, il fait beau là bas. C’est alors qu’il travaille pour une pléiade d’artistes aussi nombreux que variés. Entre autres ROB HALFORD, COOLIO, XZIBIT, CHRISTINA AGUILERA (Huh ?), FEAR FACTORY, KISS, MEGADETH, METHODS OF MAYHEM, MURDERDOLLS, TESTAMENT. Mais ce pauvre Joshua se sentait le besoin de s’exprimer, il nous a donc décidé de sortir un petit disque. Tout y passe, de la Country au Flamenco, en passant par le Metal technique ou encore le Jazz. Avouons que la subtilité n’a pas été le mot d’ordre pour la création de cet opus. Ca ressemble plutôt à : « Hey ! Regardez tout ce que je sais faire ! ». Malheureusement, le jeu de ce cher Joshua se fait rapidement lassant faute d’un manque cruel d’identité, et ceci malgré les multiples changements d’univers et de styles. A aucun moment on ne reconnaît une signature dans son jeu, aucune nouveauté, et il reste loin du feeling d’un HENDRIX, PAGE ou encore SLASH (GUNS N ROSES) qu’il cite dans ses influences. C’est un bon Technicien certes, mais pas un virtuose du tout. Et même en mettant l’aspect technique de coté, on s’ennuie ferme. Il n’y a rien de bien original, aucun charme. « Replihate » tourne autour d’un riff inspiré de MESHUGGAH sur lequel Joshua s’amuse avec sa guitare. Mais ce n’est même pas plaisant, on a l’impression d’entendre de simples schémas de gamme à toute vitesse. La batterie et la basse ne sont là que pour accompagner et donc n’apportent rien. « The Audition » est une ballade acoustique niaiseuse plutôt ennuyante. Cela me fait penser aux exercices fournis avec les magazines de Guitare. Sauf que là on rajoute un peu de clavier derrière pour faire joli. Idem pour « Twin Twang Twung » qui me rappelle assez les exercices pour apprendre à jouer de la country. Franchement là c’est à la limite du ridicule. Et la production ultra digitale ne fera qu’enfoncer encore plus cet album…
