NYDVIND a été fondé en novembre 2000 par Hingard (chant, guitares et choeurs) sur un thème très « viking metal », il s’agissait au départ plus d’un délire musical que d’un réel projet au long terme. NYDVIND est un alter ego épique et mélodique à beaucoup de groupe plus brutal et folklorique. Eternal Winter Domain, premier album du groupe, est sorti initialement en septembre 2003 chez Sacral Productions et bénéficie aujourd’hui d’une réédition via Adipocère Records. Cette réédition est agrémentée de 3 titres bonus.
NYDVIND n’est pas un groupe conceptuel à proprement parler, évidemment, il y a un concept et une orientation textuelle derrière la musique qui est en phase avec les ambiances et atmosphères développés par ce premier skeud. C’est donc tout naturellement que NYDVIND s’est orienté vers une thématique païenne et naturaliste inspirée du Grand Nord. Bien que musicalement NYDVIND puisse être proche d’un Old-ENSLAVED ou KAMPFAR, il ne peut absolument pas être qualifié de groupe de « Viking Metal » (le groupe refuse cette étiquette !), comme bien souvent cela a été mentionné, car à aucun moment on ne retrouve des références à des sujets mythologiques ou religieux. Les propos de Hingard sont clairs : « Notre univers se cantonne à décrire notre Mère Nature et les grands espaces dont elle nous fait grâce ».
Eternal Winter Domain, œuvre glaciale et épique, est un voyage musical au cœur d'un monde où la neige règne aux côtés des divinités païennes. Cet aspect païen est renforcé par les nombreuses parties acoustiques présentes sur la galette, les vocaux clairs et les chœurs entraînants. L’album démarre fort avec la sublime introduction « A Winter Chant » et le début de « King of The Hills » mais cela n’est qu’éphémère car le tempo retombe vite et les parties de chant sonnent bizarrement. L’album souffre d’un passage à vide jusqu’au titre « Blood and Steel » avec ses multiples riffs glaciaux et empreints d'une noirceur sans fond sont très originaux et complexes. De manière générale, les morceaux possèdent un feeling et des émotions sombres et brumeuses. Bien que le groupe ait un batteur aujourd’hui, la batterie sur ce skeud est en fait une boite à rythmes au tempo modéré qui manque cruellement d'énergie et de puissance. Les parties de clavier, discrète mais bel et bien présentes, apportent leur pierre à l’édifice et donne une atmosphère supplémentaire aux titres.
Pour finir je ne pense pas que les trois titres bonus soient indispensables, car l’album peut paraître long, trop long par moment (plus de 70 min !!!) mais Eternal Winter Domain rend un bel hommage à l'hiver et à la nature. Cette réédition permettra à ceux qui ne connaissaient pas le groupe, de voir que la France aussi propose de bon album !
