C'est dans la tranquillité d'un motel un peu miteux que GREATDAYFORUP a trouvé son salut. La halte lugubre des routiers américains qui, une fois embarqués sur la mythique route 66, n'ont plus besoin de toucher leur volant et peuvent se rouler peinard un petit mégot dans leur cabine. Certes, le tracé de la route ne passe pas par l'Etat de New-York, d'où viennent ces garçons, mais dans l'esprit de Flores De Sangre, c'est l'Amérique profonde et les nuques brulées par le soleil qui sont décrites. Encore un soupçon de ce Stoner Rock, et tu sens presque le tumbleweed approcher dangereusement, poussé par les vents chauds. Un paquet de clichés est donc véhiculé par cet album, le deuxième les concernant, et en dépit de sa touche facile, le travail réalisé par ces garçons n'en est pas moins appliqué.
Deux d'entre eux ont quitté la meute en 2007, provoquant la fin de l'aventure GREATDAYFORUP, avant d'aller fonder IRONWEED un peu plus loin. Pour ceux à qui un disque de la trempe de Flores De Sangre manquerait, et ils doivent être légion en nos pages, vous pouvez aller vous rabattre sur la nouvelle mouture, génitrice de deux full-lenghts (en 2008 et 2011). Pour les autres, ce sera suffisant. Néanmoins, n'allons pas trop vite en besogne. Car la première chose qui frappe à l'écoute de cet opus, c'est la personnalité déjà bien affirmée du groupe. Les guitares sont Heavy, les cadences lourdes. Un bon Stoner des familles se profile à l'horizon, porté par le chant voilé de Mike Langone. De "Taste Of The Wasted", Rock N' Roll en diable, à "Three Card" et sa basse ronronnante, que de bonnes surprises ! Le classicisme de leur jeu, auréolé d'une touche psychédélique et ironiquement redneck ("Mans Ruin") apporte une candeur bienvenue à l'œuvre. Ceci étant, sous la canopée, il n'y a pas réellement de soleil, et c'est peut-être cette absence de temps forts qui pénalise le plus Flores De Sangre. Tout se déroule finalement assez tranquillement, sans rebondissement rocambolesque, sans chipotage, au profit d'un Rock métallisé, stagnant, sudoripare et tourné vers la luminosité du riff Heavy qui vient rafraichir une ambiance moite. Il serait réducteur d'affirmer que GREATDAYFORUP exerce son art comme un roc, car on décèle parfois l'ombre d'une variation ("Wish I Was Gone"). Mais ça n'influe malheureusement pas assez sur l'album pour qu'on s'en souvienne, et si ces New-Yorkais devaient se laisser photographier, ils poseraient probablement les doigts de pieds en éventail sous l'auvent d'une station-service, une bière dans une main, une guitare dans l'autre. Pas trop vite le matin, doucement l'après-midi. Mais pourquoi cette âme créative, qui jaillit sur le morceau éponyme, ne s'applique t'elle pas sur les onze pistes précédentes ? Elle complèterait pourtant à merveille une identité précocement marquée ! C'est une question à laquelle GREATDAYFORUP n'aura pas sur répondre.
Huit ans après sa sortie, effectivement, il est trop tard pour soulever cette interrogation. Du tas de cendres qu'il nous reste, on ne distingue au final qu'un disque sympathique, loin de mettre en évidence le potentiel de ces Ricains, mais globalement décent. Aussi je vous renvoie aux racines étymologiques du mot "Stoner" pour vous convaincre que définitivement, on avait tort d'en réclamer davantage.
