Mark Sweeney, the self made man ou l’homme-orchestre d’aujourd’hui, décida vers l’âge de 17 ans de travailler sa voix pour s’ouvrir à de nouveaux horizons, tant au travers de groupes comme STAYN, CHERRY PIE dans les 90’s que dans ses actuels projets solo.
Le succès vint avec CRYSTAL BALL, nouvelle appellation de CHERRY PIE, signé par Nuclear Blast, à travers des tournées partagées avec U.D.O., PRETTY MAIDS,…et le bastion helvétique composé de KROKUS et GOTTHARD.
Tout cela est formateur, et abouti en 2010 au second album solo All In, pour lequel Mark Sweeney est crédité de toutes les musiques et paroles, avec au fil des morceaux quelques invités.
Sur la pochette, l’illustration reprend notre égocentrique dans une salle de jeux, ambiance Las Vegas, avec un paquet de jetons sur la table et quelques cartes qui volent dont l’as de cœur…il doit y avoir un message ! l’argent ne fait pas le bonheur !, heureux au jeu, malheureux en amour ! chacun peut y aller de son interprétation. Au milieu du livret, une machine à sous expulse des centaines de pièces à l’effigie de Mark, heureusement que le narcissisme se soigne aujourd’hui mais à quel prix !
Regardons de plus prés cet album, le premier titre « Line Of Fire » nous permet de découvrir la voix de Mark qui surprend par son côté nasillard, on se croirait dans un studio de postsynchronisation de dessins animés. Le chant sera plus chaud et éraillé sur les autres titres. Il n’est pas nécessaire de nous faire peur pour rien. L’interprétation sonne plutôt Pop que Rock. La rythmique est un peu plus appuyée sur « Why Do You Hate Me » et penche à partir de ce morceau de plus en plus vers un style Brian Adams.
Nous avons notre ballade avec « Still Alive », pas mal fichue dans le genre, et saura séduire les amateurs.
« Gimme A Sign » monte crescendo, et le refrain repris en écho, nous trotte dans la tête, un titre à reprendre en live avec un succès garanti, la guitare fait une apparition remarquée car oubliée jusque là.
Les invités sont de véritables valeurs ajoutées à l’album, c’est le cas sur « Leave It All Behind » avec l’apparition de PEARL et de sa voix superbe qui fait décoller le titre, le rendant plus aérien, sur un mid tempo oscillant et une guitare plaintive. Un très beau moment, il faut le reconnaître. « Sinner » est de moins bonne facture et souffre de la comparaison avec le morceau précédent.
« Another Day » reprend les poncifs du genre Hard FM, et « Stare At The Sun » se révèle plus intimiste avec une partie instrumentale minimaliste, à privilégier pour les moments douillets. Il en va de même pour la ballade « Moments » en duo avec Robin Beck.
Bruce Kulick (ex. KISS) vient plaquer quelques accords sur le titre « Too Late », la voix de Mark s’affirme plus nettement, bien posée, et plus groovy. Un des morceaux les plus matures de l’album. « Chance » avec son intro un tantinet arabisante révèle une facette plus originale. Et on réserve le meilleur pour la fin avec « Demons » avec Jörg Michael (STRATOVARIUS, DEVIL’S TRAIN) aux drums et Stefan Kaufman (ACCEPT, U.D.O.) à la guitare. Le titre le plus rock de l’album, fédérateur entre tous. C’est dans ce registre que Mark Sweeney marque le plus de points et qu’il gagnera le gros lot, récompensé de toutes ses heures passées dans les salles de jeux conforme au visuel de l’album.
All In est assez inégal, pour s’en convaincre il suffit d’écouter le premier et le dernier titre à la suite, la faute à une voix pas toujours maitrisée, des arrangements timorés, mais tout n’est pas à jeter. Je vous invite tout particulièrement à prêter une oreille sur « Leave It All Behind », « Too Late » et « Demons », morceaux qui prouvent que les invités de Mark ne viennent pas les mains vides, satisfaisant ainsi notre appétit. L’Union fait la force, All In en est une belle illustration.
