En 2008, ARKAN s’était fait remarqué avec Hilal, un premier album mélangeant habilement musique orientale et Death Metal. La formation fondée par Foued Moukid, l’ex batteur de THE OLD DEAD TREE, affichait déjà une certaine maturité en offrant des compositions aussi originales qu’accrocheuses. On attendait donc une confirmation après ces débuts prometteurs.
Dés les premières notes d’« Origins », on retrouve les éléments qui avaient fait la réussite du premier opus. Un premier morceau particulièrement efficace, grâce à un riff entrainant et un refrain aérien. Les instruments traditionnels occupent encore une fois une place prépondérante, et s’intègrent parfaitement à la musique du combo. En effet les sonorités orientales se mêlent avec subtilité aux influences Death Metal, et apportent beaucoup d’intensité.
Sans surprise, l’influence d’ORPHANED LAND, le premier groupe à avoir réalisé un tel mélange, est omniprésente. Cependant ARKAN officie dans un registre légèrement plus extrême que ses ainés, et propose des parties Death lourdes et agressives. La musique des Français est donc plus contrastée, ce qui est renforcé par l’alternance entre les growls de Florent Jannier et le chant clair de Sarah Layssac (ex THE OUTBURST).
Cette dernière, qui fait maintenant officiellement partie du groupe, est largement mise à l’honneur tout au long de l’album. Sa voix apporte encore plus de profondeur aux compositions et renforce le coté dépaysant et mystique de l’ensemble. Cela se ressent particulièrement dans les compositions les plus atmosphériques (« Call From Within »).
Parmi les titres les plus marquants de l’album, on notera également « Deus Vult », sur lequel Kobi Farhi fait une apparition. Son chant clair et profond soutien à merveille ce morceau à l’ambiance pesante.
Salam est donc une franche réussite, un album d’une grande richesse, qui ne lasse pas après plusieurs écoutes. ARKAN semble avoir gagné en maitrise, et livre des compositions particulièrement travaillées et efficaces.
