Ne vous fiez pas à la pochette très old school, EXELOUME n’est pas un groupe de Revival Thrash Metal de plus. En effet, le propos est ici plus ambitieux, et bien que Fairytale Of Perversion ne soit que son premier LP, le combo affiche déjà une certaine maturité.
En premier lieu, le niveau technique affiché par les musiciens sur cet opus est impressionnant. Le groupe enchaine les solos et les riffs de haute volée, mais n’en oublie pas pour autant d’être efficace. Comme sur le très direct « Psychopath », qui devrait en faire headbanguer plus d’un avec son tempo frénétique et un riff très rentre dedans. Le chant, souvent doublé, et particulièrement agressif, renforce le coté percutant des compositions. Les Norvégiens savent aussi ralentir le tempo, et proposer des structures plus alambiquées, (« Hellhole », qui évoque à la fois DEATH et CORONER). D’autres morceaux se détachent du lot, comme « Ignorance is Bliss », dont le riff fait l’effet d’un rouleau compresseur, et sur lequel Andy LaRocque (KING DIAMOND) s’invite le temps d’un solo. « Tool of God » dévoile quant à lui une facette un peu plus mélodique, notamment grâce à un break très malsain.
Bien qu’EXELOUME emprunte largement au Thrash des années 80 et au Death des années 90, leur son reste relativement moderne. Notamment en raison de l’excellente production signée Dan Swanö, qui met bien en valeur les compositions avec un son très puissant. Celui-ci pousse également quelques gueulantes sur « Our Poisonous Creation », un des titres les plus extrêmes de l’album, ponctué de quelques blast beats.
L’ensemble manque encore légèrement d’originalité. Le quintet ne cherche pas à réinventer la roue, et certaines références restent très présentes sur certains titres (DEATH en particulier). Mais ces influences sont particulièrement bien exploitées, et les compositions sont à la fois complexes et efficaces.
Ce premier effort est donc une petite bombe de Thrash/Death technique et brutal. EXELOUME s’impose comme un groupe très prometteur.
