A peine The Secrets Of The Black Arts est-il sorti que DARK FUNERAL doit faire face à des remaniements de line-up non négligeables. Themgoroth, bassiste-hurleur, quitte le navire et se voit remplacé par Emperor Magus Caligula (en fait Magnus « Masse » Broberg, chanteur d’HYPOCRISY sur les albums Penetralia et Osculum Obscenum). Ce n’est pourtant pas le changement majeur auquel DARK FUNERAL doit faire face, même si Themgoroth avaient largement contribué aux paroles et à la musique du premier album. Le batteur Equimanthorn est également éjecté au profit d’Alzazmon. Sous ce pseudonyme se cache Tomas Asklund, qui plus tard participera à la renaissance du DISSECTION de Jon Nödtveidt et intègrera GORGOROTH.
Bientôt, après avoir enregistré deux titres pour un Tribute à BATHORY (à savoir « Call From The Grave » et « Equimanthorn »), c’est au tour de Blackmoon de quitter DARK FUNERAL, qui perd là l’un de ses membres les plus influents. Qu’à cela ne tienne, Lord Ahriman composera la musique de DARK FUNERAL et Emperor Magus Caligula se chargera des vociférations.
Et même si le deuxième six cordiste Typhos (Henrik Hekeroth) apporte quelque peu sa pierre à l’édifice, on peut grandement ressentir sur Vobiscum Satanas que Lord Ahriman se retrouve maître à bord. Toujours produit par Peter Tägtgren aux Studios Abyss, et bénéficiant d’un son encore plus clair (certains diront plus « pro »), Vobiscum Satanas ne réédite pas l’exploit de son prédécesseur. Le ténébreux guitariste a certes réutilisé les ficelles de « My Dark Desires » ou « The Dawn No More Rises », sans franchement raviver la flamme qui brûlait si fort sur The Secrets Of The Black Arts.
On note bien quelques nuances envoûtantes (« The Black Winged Horde »), des instants terrifiants où Alzazmon fait parler la poudre et où Caligula s’impose comme le démon ultime (« Vobiscum Satanas »), des titres voués à devenir cultes (« Thy Legions Come » et « Evil Prevail »), mais il reste bien difficile pour Vobiscum Satanas d’atteindre le sublime de l’opus précédent. De plus l’artwork donne dans les tons bleus, d’où une sensation de déjà-vu, comme si DARK FUNERAL nous jouait une redite … mais en beaucoup moins marquant.
Vobiscum Satanas reste cependant un album de Black Metal fort acceptable et ne fait pas tâche dans la discographie de DARK FUNERAL. Il s’agit enfin du symbole d’un nouveau rituel pour DARK FUNERAL, celle de nommer tous ses albums en latin.
