En cette sombre année 1997, AKERCOCKE est née autour de Jason Mendoça (guitare) et David Gray (batterie), suite au split de leur précédent groupe : SALEM ORCHID. Ils sont rapidement rejoints par Paul Scanlan (guitare) et Peter Theobalds (Basse). Deux ans après sort le premier opus du groupe au titre très évocateur : Rape Of The Bastard Nazarene.
10 ans après ses débuts et avec quelques changements de line-up, voici son nouvel album : Antichrist. A la lecture du nom des albums, des titres des morceaux et des paroles, le groupe n’a pas changé de conviction. Suivant la ligne conductrice de ses précédents albums, AKERCOCKE est de retour avec un album primitif aux influences multiples.
Très personnel, très déjanté, très brut… chaque morceau est une histoire à part entière. Bien que chaque morceau soit unique, avec des influences totalement différentes allant du Black, au Death en passant par le Grind le plus brutal ou des moments beaucoup plus aérés au chant clair, ils ont une même ligne directrice. « Summon The Antichriste » et son intro bizarre (« Black Messian ») nous mets tout de suite dans l’ambiance et ce n’est pas très joyeux ! Vocaux gutturaux, guitares bien grasses, basse vrombissante… puis tout d’un coup, guitare acoustique, chant clair : bienvenue dans le monde psychotique d’AKERCOCKE.
Le titre « Axiom » est le « single » de l’album. Une vidéo a été tournée pour ce morceau… autant le dire tout de suite, même si les vocaux gutturaux sont présents, c’est le morceau le plus accessible de l’album, le plus réussi aussi. Il est d’une structure complexe et peu banale, mais néanmoins très efficace ! Certain passage de l’album sont tout simplement ennuyeux, comme le début du titre « My Apterous Angel » qui est aussi plat que les seins de Jane Birkin. Ce n’est pas non plus son riff de guitare inspiré (plagié ?) de « Cthulhu Dawn » de CRADLE OF FILTH, qui va changer la donne. Sur la fin l’album perd en intensité, heureusement qu’il a un « The Dark Inside » furieux et fougueux et très réussi (deuxième Single ???) pour sauver la mise !
Antichrist devra demander beaucoup de courage pour être apprécié à sa juste valeur et cela confirme qu’AKERCOKE est un groupe « à part » dans le monde du Metal Extreme.
