Après CEPHALIC CARNAGE, je passe à MARILLION : autant dire que la chute est rude et que j’évite de peu les vertiges. Les textes se veulent engagés en abordant la question de la pauvreté dans le monde (« A Voice From The Past ») ou encore de la préservation de la planète (« The Last Century For Man »). De là à parler de violence verbale, il y a un pas, ou plutôt un fossé, que je n’oserais franchir.
Après trois albums en demie teinte, Radiat10n, marillion.com, Anoraknophobia et le double Marbles, adoubé par les fans du groupe, MARILLION nous revient avec son (déjà) quatorzième opus. Pour Somewhere Else, les Anglais ont fait appel au producteur Mike Hunter. Exit donc le compagnon de route Dave Meegan pour un résultat qui, aux dires de certains progueux avertis, renouerait avec l’énergie et la spontanéité des débuts. Pour tenir de tels propos, il ne faut vraisemblablement jamais avoir écouté « Il est pas carré, il est pas rond, il est ovale mon trou de balle » des grindeux de GRONIBARD. Tout comme qualifier le, il est vrai plus rock, « Most Toys », de bourrin, aurait de quoi surprendre Mikka Luttinen, le leader charismatique d’IMPALED NAZARENE.
Somewhere Else est un album mélancolique mais très propre, très lisse, presque fini à la raboteuse pour éviter la moindre aspérité.
Ayant particulièrement apprécié le dernier PORCUPINE TREE, j’avoue ne pas avoir été convaincu par ce Somewhere Else qui, malgré de belles mélodies (avec une mention spéciale pour « A Voice From The Past »), peine à maintenir l’intérêt le long de ses cinquante minutes d’autant que certains titres (« No Such Thing ») se révèlent peu inspirés. Il ne s’agit pas ici de contester ni la créativité ni les capacités techniques du combo mais le statut culte d’une formation reste définitivement une histoire de goût.
Par son style éthéré et aérien, la musique de MARILLION est souvent assimilée à une invitation au rêve. Attention toutefois à ce qu’elle ne soit pas une invitation au sommeil…
