MIRROR OF DECEPTION constitue un groupe de Doom Metal. Ce quartet fut fondé par deux guitaristes, Michael Siffermann et Jochen Fopp en 1990 à Goppingen à côté de Stuttgart en Allemagne. Considérés comme une des plus grandes formations de Doom d’Allemagne et d’Europe centrale pour faire le pro-Européen (en Allemagne c’est ce qu’ils disent en tout cas, que ne ferait-on pas pour vendre des albums !), seuls les irréductibles et inflexibles connaisseurs de l’univers Doom devaient connaître la discographie complète de ce combo teuton sur le bout des doigts. Interpellons les profanes pour leur rappeler que MIRROR OF DECEPTION n’en est pas à son premier coup d’essai puisque Shards est leur troisième album en seize années d’existence. Ultra productif et fécond et après quelques démos sans grand intérêt, celles-ci laissèrent leur place à une première livraison musicale Mirrorsoil en 2001 suivi d’un second opus Foregone trois ans plus tard.
Les génies créateurs allemands, largement influencés par les pères fondateurs du genre que sont les BLACK SABBATH, CANDLEMASS, PENTAGRAM ou SAINT VITUS exécutent au travers de ces dix pistes un Doom Atmosphérique classique bien interprété mais aux arrangements Rock. L’album démarre avec « Haunted » dont la voix pourrait le chant éraillé de Dave Wyndorf de MONSTER MAGNET. Le riff central du morceau s’identifie parfaitement avec l’ambiance du morceau. Cela commence plutôt bien. L’intro à la basse du morceau suivant « Ghost » annonce un morceau au tempo plus gras. On entre vraiment dans une atmosphère de Doom mid-tempo basique, toujours avec cette voix d’écorché vif, à la fois fragile et tendre parvenant à faire passer certaines émotions. Un registre vocal loin d’être monolithique. Un titre sombre et envoûtant. Les teutons mettent du temps à sortir des albums mais leurs compositions sont à la hauteur de cette attente. Avec le titre « Swamped », on glisse vers une ambiance plus intérieure et emprise de complainte. Le morceau suivant, « The Eruption », porte à merveille son nom. Une débauche d’énergie par le biais de riffs catchy aux lignes vocales bien placées, avec un petit côté à la LIFE OF AGONY. On est surpris par la conviction des morceaux que MIRROR OF DECEPTION nous offre. Point de déception surtout que « Insomnia » enfonce le clou avec sa mélodie vénéneuse et lancinante. Bien que traînant en longueur, ce titre vaut le coup d’être entendu.
Dans l’ensemble, on ressent également des influences à la CATHEDRAL, la lourdeur en moins. Le combo lève le pied avec la solide « The Dead Pledge » et nous l’assène de plein fouet, et c’est en pleine bourre que MIRROR OF DECEPTION continue son bonhomme de chemin avec l’Heavy « The Capital New » et sa rythmique rapide. Les Allemands haussent le ton et savent accélérer quand l’envie leur en prend. Néanmoins, la fin de l’opus est nettement plus décevante. Un titre comme « Lyre » et son break frisant les 3 BPM ne sera pas un des plus représentatifs de l’album. De même que « Frozen Fortune » et surtout « Enigma » sont tristes et chiant à en mourir. La production tout en étant honnête et rendant justice aux morceaux du miroir de la déception aurait gagné à être plus crue. De même qu’un combo jouant sur les thèmes de la déception devra faire passer plus ce genre d’émotions et éviter les complaintes doucereuses et suaves.
Si la majorité des titres traînent en longueur et sapent légèrement le plaisir que l’on peut ressentir pour ces morceaux, MIRROR OF DECEPTION mérite son titre de groupe phare de Doom en Allemagne. Les germains s’en tirent bien et n’ont pas à rougir de leur offrande. Rien d’original mais au fond, si cela est bien fait, on ne va non plus s’en plaindre !
