Formation de la côte Est américaine existant depuis 1998, c’est avec ce premier opus que les rejetons d’Unearth ont acquis une solide réputation en dispensant au cours de multiples tournées aux U.S.A. et en Europe leurs rythmiques caractéristiques du son estampillé « Metalcore ».
Nonobstant, ils ont osé incorporer des éléments Progressifs complémentaires qui s’imbriquent à merveille avec les compositions traditionnelles Metalcoreuses.
J’entends déjà les puristes en matière de Prog’ en train de s’insurger… mais toujours est-il que l’alchimie fonctionne puisqu’on a droit à un album audacieux et inhabituel, ce qui est plutôt inattendu pour un groupe évoluant dans ce genre musical, aux assises plus que conventionnelles. N’étant pas à proprement parlé féru d’ambiances progressives, Unearth se détache du lot et haut la main.
Certes, on retrouve les poncifs d’un genre en plein essor avec des mosh parts adroitement insérées et des breaks bien massifs. La personnalité du groupe tient au fait qu’ils ont pris le pari d’apporter des touches « maidenesques » comme sur les titres « My Heart Bleeds No Longer », « Fuel The Fire » ou encore « Only The People » avec des mélodies entêtantes et un riff mélodique récurent apparaissant ici et là sous des formes plus ou moins déclinées tout au long du disque.
De même que les titres « My Desire » et « Vanishment » de l’enregistrement illustrent à eux seuls leur prise de risque, celles-ci contenant des breaks attrayants que ne renieraient pas les membres d’Opeth ou d’autres formations reconnues de Death mélodique.
Album à l’équilibre et à l’écriture impeccable, la production classe est là pour rehausser le niveau et mettre en valeur l’habileté de chacun des musiciens, même si le chant est, à mon goût, un tantinet trop lisse et parfois inadapté mais pas désagréable.
Ce premier essai transformé en 2001 par les extraterrestres d’Unearth vaut le coup qu’on s’y attarde, bien que plusieurs écoutes soient nécessaires pour se familiariser avec leur patte et leur inventivité tout au long de ces 40 minutes.
Unearth a le mérite d’avoir su créer son propre univers en partant d’une sphère musicale usée et commune tout en prouvant qu’ils sont à la fois si proche et si loin de la galaxie Metalcore.
