Grandement influencé par le travail de Black Sabbath entre autres, des groupes comme Cathedral ont, vers la fin des années 80 combiné le Doom avec des touches plus psychédéliques, créant par la même occasion un style qui peut être considéré comme une forme hybride de Doom et de Stoner.
Auteurs d’une discographie impressionnante (albums et EP confondus) et bénéficiant d’une grande popularité dans le cercle des aficionados, ce n’est que l’an dernier qu’Earache (leur ancien label) nous a ressorti une sorte de best of agrémenté de quelques raretés comprenant des démos et des lives sélectionnés par la bande elle-même ! Le livret, quant à lui, en dehors du fait d’être très soigné, offre deux interviews des deux membres fondateurs de ce monument, Mr Lee Dorian et Gaz Jennings !
Autant vous le dire tout de suite, on a de l’or en barre entre les mains car Cathedral fait office d’extra-terrestre dans le giron de la scène Metal ! Tour à tour lents, pesants et parfois languissants, leurs compositions et leurs arrangements sont uniques en leur genre et ont indiscutablement insufflé un souffle nouveau ! On peur affirmer qu’il y a eu un avant et un après Cathedral car leur son est identifiable entre milles.
Aussi à l’aise dans les ambiances mélancoliques empruntes de noirceur que pour les ryhthmiques groovy délires, les natifs de la perfide Albion n’ont pas leur pareil pour lâcher des riffs bien gras et autres rythmiques bien plombées. Et que dire des prestations vocales toujours à la hauteur de Lee Dorian, dont le registre vocal s’est considérablement élargi depuis ses débuts en 1991 sur « Forest Of Equilibrium ».
C’est donc avec plaisir que nous retrouvons les plus grands succès du combo anglais, avec « Hopkins (Witchfinder General) », « Midnight Mountain », en passant par « Cosmic Funeral », « Voodoo Fire », « Ride » etc… Leurs principaux albums sont donc passés au crible, histoire d’avoir une approche assez large de l’œuvre d’un groupe qui écume les scènes depuis 15 ans maintenant !
Pour ceux qui sont familiers avec les compositions de ce monument (ah, ah !) vous vous y retrouverez, et pour les novices, il est plutôt conseillé d’écouter les morceaux à partir de « Ebony Tears » couvrant leur débuts puis de passer aux premiers morceaux de la rondelle afin d’avoir un aperçu de l’évolution musicale du géant du Doom anglais ! Comme dirait le Lee Dorian, « Doom Or Be Doomed » ! Pour moi, cela sera: “To Be Doomed!”
