Un petit tour et puis s'en va. C'est le destin ô combien heureux de DR PLUMP, qui nous aura fait grâce fin 2007 d'un premier album ô combien anecdotique. Mais replaçons les choses dans leur contexte. Ce n'est pas comme si ce trio avait revendiqué un concept, un intérêt, une vocation. Non, bien au contraire. Je crois que DR PLUMP, du temps où il tentait de pratiquer, était un projet honnête, avec très peu d'estime de lui-même, qui jouait à qui mieux mieux dans le fin fond d'un garage, représentant fièrement cette scène underground de chez underground qui s'amuse sans se prendre la tête. Elle existe et nous, on l'ignore. Parce que rares sont ceux à oser proposer un album, et encore moins un album de ce calibre là. Ces mecs ont eu les couilles et la témérité de vouloir sortir de l'ombre avec un objet mal fait, mal produit, reflet d'un amateurisme qu'on trouve parfois séduisant mais pas toujours non plus. Sur ce coup là, c'est plutôt raté, et on oubliera Potential Presidential Candidate aussi vite qu'on l'aura écouté.
Le DIY, c'est un état d'esprit sympathique mais franchement, quand ça dégouline sur des approximations comme c'est le cas ici, merci mais non merci. La première chose qui frappe sur ce disque, c'est la production. Exécrable, grésillante, 100% rustique. Ça passe pour les groupes de Black Metal sortis du trou du cul de la Norvège mais là, il faut reconnaître que DR PLUMP adopte un style assez Metal (pour faire large) et que le coup de la poêle à frire en fond sonore passe moyennement. Stylistiquement, les Nordistes rattachent le côté le plus clodo dégueulasse du Thrash Metal avec certaines intonations Hardcore et Punk. Autant dire que ça sent le vomi, la clope froide, la pisse chaude et peut-être même certains autres fluides corporels selon vos expériences de concert respectives. Niveau écriture, c'est tout aussi bancal. Les compositions ne sont pas fluides, elles ont même plutôt tendance à taper sur le système même si le trio parvient parfois à étoffer son jeu, comme sur "Four Bullets" aux accents Heavy (vraiment pas mal comme titre !) ou sur "One Bullet" dont la tranquillité mélodique évoque carrément la "Corrida" de Cabrel. Pour le reste, mieux vaut avoir les nerfs bien accrochés. Car si actuellement la gloire se livre spontanément aux groupes qui déstructurent le Metal (avec notamment cette vague Math / Djent / Prog et compagnie...), une formation comme DR PLUMP, forte de créations barrées comme "Richisme" ou "1, 2, 3 Pecos" fait juste n'importe quoi, sans aucune cohérence ni ambition, si ce n'est celle d'être un peu lourde. Assurément, on ne prend pas de plaisir avec Potential Presidential Candidate et encore moins avec le peu de choses qui nous reste, à savoir des textes engagés façon TAGADA JONES, l'art de les déclamer en moins. Ce n'est pas vraiment une déception puisqu'on n'attendait rien de spécial de leur part. Simplement, l'amour de la musique rugueuse et directe qui suinte de ce disque (et c'est d'ailleurs sa principale et unique qualité), sauve peut-être les apparences du naufrage mais pas son contenu, désespérément tiède.
En être relégué à un album pour afters bien arrosées, ce n'est pas forcément la fatalité dont rêvait DR PLUMP. Quoiqu'avec des garçons aussi insouciants, on peut s'attendre à tout et quand bien même c'eut été l'objectif, j'aurais pris un plaisir malsain à décuver sur une œuvre n'offrant pas un minimum de confort cérébral. Bref, ne changez rien les mecs. Si vous avez pris votre pied à composer cet effort, ça fera au moins trois âmes comblées. Les autres n'auront qu'à aller chercher leur félicité ailleurs.
