En janvier 2008, Marcus Bischoff vomissait dans son micro. We are, we are, we are the final resistance. A quelques milliers de kilomètres d'Erfurt, bastion natal d'HEAVEN SHALL BURN, un écho venu de Suède. THE RESISTANCE est né. Il fallait avoir l'esprit affûté, soulagé d'un brouillard matinal que l'ami Ricoré se plait à chasser, pour distinguer le RESISTANCE belge du THE RESISTANCE suédois. Et pourtant, à y regarder de plus près, aucune mégarde possible. Le Death Metal a beau être leur dénominateur commun, quand on s'appelle Strömblad ou Ljungström, il n y a pas 36 solutions. Soit on est un pot en terre cuite IKEA pour décorer ses étagères Vittsjö, soit on a fait partie d'IN FLAMES et ce passé brillant légitime la formation d'un nouveau projet musical. Assurément, Jesper et Glenn ont voulu avancer dans cette optique. Pas forcément celle de vouloir faire une sale concurrence à la bande à Anders Fridén, mais plutôt de vouloir être un nouvel élan pour cette scène Death suédoise qui a autant de représentants que de recettes de tiramisu par famille italienne.
Ainsi naquit Rise From Treason et aussi instantanément qu'une poudre lyophilisée industrielle diluée à l'eau micro-ondée se transforme en café grand cru pour la ménagère matinale, l'idée de base de THE RESISTANCE jaillit dans l'esprit de l'auditeur sans trop avoir à ruer dans les méninges. Ce groupe, avec à son bord des ex-membres d'IN FLAMES mais aussi Marco Aro, ex-THE HAUNTED et Christopher Barkensjö, ex-CONSTRUCDEAD et ex-CARNAL FORGE, sera le nouveau spécimen de foire de l'année 2013. On se pressera pour l'admirer, pour le prendre en photo, car un peu à l'image de ce qu'a voulu faire BLOODBATH par le passé ou MASACHIST par le présent, THE RESISTANCE peut légitimement prétendre au titre d'all-star band. Avec un CV long comme le bras, on leur pardonnera cette hérésie. Pour ce qui est de leur EP, qui en appelle solennellement à un premier album, la tâche va s'annoncer un peu moins aisée que prévu. Les Suédois ne proposent pour ainsi dire rien qui fasse sauter au plafond. Sur fond de rythmiques punkys, de mouvements hatebreediens, Rise From Treason transforme le Death Metal old-school de mémé ENTOMBED et de pépé UNLEASHED en un concentré de puissance assez inoffensif. Le son est de 2013, le fond de 1990, l'exécution de 2006, quand IN FLAMES sortait des albums aussi médiocres que Come Clarity. Mélodique par moments, brutal par d'autres, le Death Metal de THE RESISTANCE se distingue finalement par des sections rythmiques percutantes et une production rutilante. Côté compos, la platitude est plutôt de mise, même si la technique est à la hauteur des personnages. Seule "Face To Face" possède une flamme galvanisante que s'empressent d'étouffer l'expéditive "Rise From Treason" et la cartonnée "Slugger".
L'EP s'achève ainsi, treize petites minutes après avoir démarré. Sans qu'on puisse tirer aucune conclusion, si ce n'est que dans les faits, THE RESISTANCE a servi un amuse-gueule qui sent le frigo. Sous le saumon fumé, un beurre rance trahit la noblesse d'un l'apéritif qu'on aurait préféré éviter. Scars, leur premier opus, sortira quatre mois après ce cocktail mondain et creux, avec pour seul objectif de nous renvoyer à nos études enfin repus.
