Une chose est sûre, on n’est pas en présence de débutants…mais d’un groupe trop méconnu peut-être…1988 : premières grattes et répétitions dans un garage…2009 : sortie du huitième album Forever Fight.
Entre 1991 et 1994 : deux démos qui ont reçues un accueil favorable dans la presse Metal transalpine. Le premier album I Won’t Burn Alone, en 1995, ouvre à WHITE SKULL la porte du tour bus et c’est parti pour les premiers concerts. Plus de 500 à ce jour.
Au fil des années, la programmation des concerts et festivals vont leur faire croiser des pointures telles que U.D.O., DORO, SAXON…
En 1999, avec Tales From The North, leur troisième album, le groupe s’affirme avec ce concept album baigné des mythes du Grand Nord et de ses guerriers Vikings, avec Chris Boltendahl, chanteur de GRAVE DIGGER en special guest. Et là, je dirais que la destinée de WHITE SKULL est très marquée par ce groupe, ensemble dans l’Excalibur Millenium 2000 Tour. Ils ne se quittent plus, le charme de la chanteuse originelle Federica « sister » De Boni, sans doute…
Avec l’album The Dark Age, nouvel concept album, l’inspiration vient des épisodes sanguinaires de l’Inquisition.
Côté chant, après le départ de Federica, le groupe a été rejoint par le chanteur argentin Gustavo Gabarro « Gus », ça ne voulait pas dire pour autant que le groupe voulait se mettre au tango…
Fin 2006, après le départ de « Gus », WHITE SKULL renoue avec le chant féminin avec l’arrivée d’Elisa « Over » De Palma. Ah ! ces italiens, ils ne peuvent pas se passer de femme… Le changement de line-up voit également l’arrivée d’Alessio Lucatti aux claviers et Jo Raddi à la basse.
L’enregistrement de l’album Forever Fight s’est déroulé pendant l’été 2008, produit par le master-mind Tony Mad Fonto (guitares rythmiques), et, aux manettes, Louis Stefanini (LABYRINTH, VISION DIVINE, ELDRITCH).
L’été 2008 a également vu WHITE SKULL ouvrir le Festival Rockin’Field de Milan avec, à l’affiche, MAGO DE OZ, VISION DIVINE, HELLOWEEN, AVANTASIA…
Voilà le décor est planté, écoutons maintenant.
L’intro instrumentale « We are coming » épique à souhait, affiche le genre qu’affectionne le combo.
Avec « Escape », la voix d’Elisa « Over » De Palma nous rappelle celle d’Elisa C. Martin (DARK MOOR, FAIRYLAND). Le titre dégage une rythmique bien Heavy, avec des soli guitare/clavier qui se font écho.
« Feel My Rage » est un morceau aux arrangements soignés qui permet au groupe, et à chaque membre du combo de développer son savoir-faire, ambiance et soli, avec cette voix féminine omniprésente. Des titres comme « Spy », « Etzel », « Visions » sont dans la même veine, avec des refrains vite mémorisables et des séquences chant/chœurs/guitares qui trouvent bien leurs places compte tenu de la durée des titres.
La voix d’Elisa, dans « Attle and Bleda » se fait tantôt hargneuse, tantôt mélodieuse avec des chœurs et accompagnements musicaux de toute beauté.
Le jeu se fait plus speed dans « Forever Fight », le chant plus martelé et revendicatif, la rythmique l’emporte sur la mélodie. Les guitares font merveille sur la deuxième partie du morceau avec une cavalcade endiablée.
Sur « Boudicca’s Speech », l’intro piano s’accompagne d’une voix torturée avec une forte charge émotionnelle qui ne laisse pas l’auditeur indifférent, le tout est porté par des notes délicatement délivrées par les guitares de Tony Mad Fonto et Danilo Bar… on frôle la lévitation.
L’album se conclut par « Beer, Cheers » aux sonorités folkloriques, morceau sur lequel on imagine des scouts et jeannettes courant autour du feu de camp s’initiant au circle pit… en forêt de Brocéliande, bien évidemment.
Pour conclure, je vous dirais que cet album de WHITE SKULL m’a fait l’effet, en plein été, d’un brumisateur un jour de canicule…. Alors faites-vous plaisir.
