Le nom d’un groupe n’est jamais un choix anodin. En effet, si PENUMBRA s’était appelé, je ne sais pas moi, LIGHT, cela l’aurait beaucoup moins fait. Leur musique n’est pas dépressive mais elle fait plonger dans une pénombre de laquelle on est à même d’observer et d’apprécier à sa juste valeur les différents actes qui sont joués devant nous.
Je mentirais si je disais que la musique du groupe, du moins la partie purement métallique, est d’une originalité défiant toute imagination. C’est assez classique, à la fois puissant et énergique, mais pas techniquement ahurissant. Très Heavy. Par contre, tout ce qui est ajouté à cette base Metal donne son volume à la musique. On peut parler, par exemple, du hautbois. Ce n’est pas forcément un instrument très usité dans le Metal (si vous voulez voir une bonne intrusion, penchez-vous sur ANOTHER MESSIAH) et, même si son intervention sur « Cursed Destiny » n’est pas très longue ni très complexe, son côté mélancolique ajoute une touche supplémentaire à la gamme des sentiments que la musique de PENUMBRA fait se dégager. On peut aussi parler de la cornemuse sur « Seclusion ». C’est sûr, on aurait pu en vouloir plus, pour donner un rythme nouveau au morceau, mais quand on l’écoute bien, cela donne une force terrible à ce riff de guitare incisif. Mais ce qui est le plus mémorable dans les ajouts sur ce Seclusion, ce sont les chœurs qui oscillent entre le grégorien et le baroque. Ils sont très présents et offrent une belle alternative au chant plus classique de Jarlaath et Anita Covelli. Leur plus bel effet est, selon moi, produit sur la fin du morceau « The Prophetess ». Cette fin répétitive et envoûtante m’a vraiment transportée. Pour revenir sur Jarlaath et Anita… Le premier alterne une voix Black avec un chant clair qui est assez particulier. Je ne suis pas certain que cette voix passe avec tout le monde même si elle a son charme sur certains morceaux. Anita, quant à elle, nous offre une voix qui frôle le lyrisme, sans réellement l’atteindre. Elle a une belle voix, mais elle n’est malheureusement pas tout le temps exploitée comme elle le pourrait. Des mélodies agréables ne varient pas assez alors qu’avec une voix pareille à leur service, elles auraient s’évader vers des cieux plus inspirés.
Avec Seclusion, PENUMBRA offre un album de bonne qualité qui marie Metal classique avec différents composants qui en font une musique nouvelle. C’est un opus qui mérite d’être écouté maintes et maintes fois pour être apprécié à sa juste valeur.
