Créé en 1985, NEUROSIS dût attendre 1992 pour sortir un album qui, non content de ne pas passer inaperçu, va chambouler la donne et offrir au Metal un nouvel univers. Même si on n’est pas encore dans les univers hermétiques de Enemy Of The Sun ou Through Silver In Blood, on ne peut nier que Souls At Zero décontenance. C’est lourd, agressif, déprimant, oppressant, mais pourtant terriblement mélodique. Tout ceci apporté par une instrumentation à la fois simple, riche et complexe. Il faut bien dire que les riffs de guitare de NEUROSIS ne sont pas bien compliqué, voire à la portée de n’importe qui. Je l’accorde bien volontiers. Pourtant, les différents guitares qui se mélangent et s’ajoutent au reste, clavier et samples en premier, donnent cette musique qui, si on l’écoute bien, possède de multiples couches à décrypter pour espérer toucher du doigt son essence. La meilleure démonstration est l’introduction de « Souls At Zero » où les instruments s’ajoutent petit à petit pour donner ce passage inoubliable. Mais c’est bien dans la construction des morceaux qu’il faut aller chercher l’originalité de cet album. « Stripped » ou même « To Crawl Under One’S Skin » en sont les bons exemples. On passe de quelque chose d’assez calme à une déferlante de brutalité contenue, le tout servi par des voix qui s’enchevêtrent et hurlent leur mal être à la face du monde. D’ailleurs, ces multiples voix complémentaires est une des marques de fabrique de NEUROSIS et le côté oppressant et sans espoir de leur musique provient en grande partie de ce mélange. Les samples jouent aussi un grand rôle dans la musique de NEUROSIS, même si on loin des boucles électronique habituelles. Ici, beaucoup de voix sont utilisées pour plonger l’auditeur dans telle ou telle ambiance (comme les chants grégoriens sur « Stripped »).
Même si la cassure radicale sera apportée par Enemy Of The Sun, Souls At Zero introduit le changement et les éléments qui feront de NEUROSIS le groupe mythique du Post-Hardcore qu’il est aujourd’hui. C’est un album qui s’écoute et s’écoute encore pour toujours découvrir de nouvelles facettes des morceaux qui nous étaient jusqu’alors inaccessibles. Et pourtant, à la première écoute on pense déjà avoir tout compris…
