S’il est bien un groupe païen célèbre issu de l’hymen de la Mythologie Celtique et du Black Metal, cette formation ne peut être que CRUACHAN, quintet culte irlandais fondé en 1992 par Keith Fay après la dissolution de MINAS TIRITH (toujours l’influence de J.R.R. Tolkien) qui existait depuis 1989. Amoureux des allégories et légendes locales, Keith Fay et ses complices comprirent de suite la fusion ensorcelante qui pouvait dériver de cette délectable mixtion d’éléments. Avec une formation complète pratiquant une variété d’instruments traditionnels (flûte irlandaise, harpe, sifflement d’étain, BóDhran (un tambour de peau de chèvre à main antique), Uilleann ou pipes de coude, bombardes, mandolines, violons etc.). CRUACHAN se fit très vite un nom dans le milieu surtout après l’édition de leur premier opus Tuath Na Gael en 1995 enregistré lors de la fête celtique de Bel Taine. Là où le groupe manquait cruellement de moyens de production, leur dernier ouvrage The Morrigan’s Call corrige le tir en livrant une production digne de ce nom. La particularité de ce groupe est que les membres jouent sur scène tenue de guerriers irlandais. Parés dans des robes celtiques historiquement précises avec bannières de guerre, regardez Braveheart et vous comprendrez. CRUACHAN combinent le Metal avec la musique irlandaise traditionnelle, mais il y a beaucoup plus à que cela : CRUACHAN élabore des pièces classiques, des airs médiévaux antiques. L'emploi des instruments cités précédemment ajoute aussi un élément de curiosité dans des spectacles en direct en raison de la capacité de chaque membre de jouer une variété d'instruments. Ainsi, sur un fond de fondements Metal, les apports vocaux tantôt cristallins, tantôt Black/Death ou mélodiques arrivent en renfort sur les morceaux. La voix douce et raffinée de Karen Gilligan enrobe les compositions de CRUACHAN d’une douceur et d’une festivité propre au folklore irlandais. En contrepoint, Keith Fay use de timbre rocailleux et agressif pour nous rappeler que les celtes pratiquent un Black Metal solide.
Dualité de mise, les deux chanteurs se partagent les vocalises et cela sur pratiquement tous les morceaux, comme sur « Shelob », les superbes titres comme l’agressif « The Brown Bull of Cooley » et la sombre « The Great Hunger », le titre phare de l’album. Sur fonds d’énergie, CRUACHAN propose dans le même temps des pistes davantage folklorique comme les interludes « Coffin Ships » et « The Morrigan's Call ». Affublé d’une production claire et puissante, les riffs sont à la fois allègres et destructeurs. Si les consonances instrumentales sont très présentes, les bardes irlandais parviennent tout de même à nous tenir en haleine de bout en bout sur cet album d’une durée de cinquante minutes malgré le fait qu’à la longue toutes les phases folkloriques celtiques aient tendance à sonner de la même façon. Seule une ouie attentive parviendra à y faire la différence.
Si vous êtes fan de TUATHA NE DANNAN ou de SKYCLAD, un album de CRUACHAN ne saurait que trop vous faire aimer la gigue et autre farandole irlandaise.
