Je ne vais pas être tendre, mais je vais dire les choses sincèrement et le plus objectivement possible. CALIBAN est un groupe Allemand créé en 1997 qui s’est fait plus ou moins connaître avec son album Vent sorti en 2001 chez Lifeforce Records. A cette époque leur musique empruntait de bons ingrédients au Metal, entre Thrash et parfois Death, les plans étaient couplés à une grosse dose de Hardcore survitaminé, entraînant mosh parts tranchantes et percutantes, le tout agrémenté de cris proches du déchirement vocal. En somme, une fougue implacable avec quelques petites touches d’originalités. Ceci laissait donc espérer un avenir plutôt intéressant.
Mais. Il y a évidemment un Mais, et même un immense Mais. Depuis quelques temps (depuis leur signature chez Roadrunner en fait…), le groupe tombe dans une pâle copie de KILLSWITCH ENGAGE. On alterne entre les couplets criés et les refrains mélodiques d’une niaiserie sans nom. Au bout d’un moment, c’est limite drôle tellement ça en devient ridicule. Je me demande comment le chanteur d’IN FLAMES a pu produire une telle immondice… Niveau créativité, c’est zéro. Absolument chaque plan est réchauffé au four micro-ondes sans aucune intelligence. Pour n’en citer que quelques unes, on dira que les influences sont de SOILWORK ou encore IN FLAMES. Ca ne va pas chercher bien loin. Le seul point qui aurait pu être positif, c’est l’originale reprise de « Army Of Me » de BJORK. Etant moi-même grand fan de cette artiste, j’étais plutôt séduit par l’initiative, cependant j’ai vite remballé mes espoirs quand j’ai entendu cette bouillie informe. C’est un carnage, et ceci malgré la participation de Tanja Keilen du groupe SISTER LOVE.
Evidemment, sortant de chez Roadrunner, la qualité ne peut être qu’irréprochable, quoiqu’on pourrait quand même discuter le manque de chaleur chronique. Ceci dit, je suis persuadé que ce « gros son » suffira à faire bouger nombre (trop) de têtes chevelues. On ne reprochera pas non plus l’homogénéité de l’album vu que les titres sont tous identiques. Ah non pardon, je me trompe, il y a l’intro au piano. C’est vrai, ça change tout… Mais quelle originalité ! Je ne parlerais même pas des paroles tellement c’est pitoyable. Avec des titres comme « Nothing is forever », « I rape myself », « Song about killing » ou même le nom de l’album, je vous laisse imaginer. Ce n’est pas la profondeur qui les tuera eux… Franchement je suis dégoûté de voir des groupes « finir » comme ça (si tant est que ce soit la fin… Espérons-le en tout cas). Et je suis d’autant plus dépité de voir que ce sont ces groupes là qui ont de la reconnaissance et qui s’en mettent plein les poches avec leur label alors que d’autres groupes pleins de bonne volonté et de bonnes idées en chient comme des Russes. C’est à vomir.
