On ne présente plus La Messe à La Chandelle car il s’agit bien évidemment des géniteurs du Doom Metal ! Mais que le chemin fut rocailleux et semé d’embûches. A la suite d’énièmes splits et autres come-backs assez mal négociés, Messiah, Leif and Co. reviennent enfin après 6 ans d’absence sur le devant de la scène avec leur dernière œuvre donc, sobrement intitulée « Candlemass », disponible d’ores et déjà dans les bacs.
Précurseurs d’un style auquel ils auront donné leurs lettres de noblesse par le biais d’une discographie assez prolifique avec 10 albums en presque 20 ans d’existence, les Maîtres ès Doom Metal nous ont une nouvelle fois concocté une petite décoction bien étoffée et charnue.
Tout d’abord, les compositions sont magistralement portées par la voix ultra puissante et juste de Messiah Marcolin, qui confère aux mélodies de chacun des morceaux une force et une émotion plus palpable.
Comme quoi les rythmiques grasses et les mid-tempos ne sont pas nécessairement synonymes de chants hurlés et caverneux ; ainsi, des lignes vocales au coffre puissant et harmonieux peuvent parfaitement faire l’affaire ! La preuve en musique avec des titres tels que « Black Dwarf » et « Witches », purs morceaux Heavy aux accroches mélodiques, ou bien « Seven Silver Keys », chanson chargée d’intensité et où Messiah Marcolin nous fait étalage de sa large palette vocale en se rapprochant de standards du combo suédois, tels que « Solitude » ou bien « At The Gallows’ End ».
Des titres plus « traditionnels », oserais-je dire, sont également présents pour satisfaire les adeptes les plus orthodoxes et rigides de Doom : je pense notamment à « Assassin Of The Light » et « Copernicus », pour ne citer que ceux-ci.
Nous avons droit également à un instrumental du plus bel effet, « The Man Who Fell From The Sky », pur témoignage de Doom Metal à la Candlemass.
Dignes héritiers des génies de Black Sabbath, Candlemass revient vraiment en force avec ce 10ème opus à l’écriture et à l’interprétation haut de gamme !
Gageons que cela soit une re-formation durable et stable afin que nos amis suédois continuent d’entretenir la flamme et la légende du Doom Metal !
