DAMNED NATION avait attiré notre attention avec des albums de Hard Rock énergiques et bourrés de qualités qui nous avaient incités à être attentifs quant à son évolution. Ici le groupe a souhaité faire un virage Heavy tout en remplaçant son chanteur ; cela fait trop de changements pour ce petit groupe qui fait là une sortie de route.
Le registre musical puise toujours son inspiration dans le Metal des 80’s/90’s mais cette fois c’est de gros Heavy qu’il s’agit avec des riffs tels qu’ils surgissaient des guitares de Akira Takasaki (LOUDNESS) ou Impellitteri. Ce n’est pas là que se situe le problème car le groupe a le gros son ; et même si ce n’est pas très inspiré, il est difficile de rester insensible à autant de grosses guitares. Malheureusement Matti Alfonzetti, le remplaçant du remarquable Thomas Thorsén au chant, n’a pas la même carrure. Si ses capacités vocales ne peuvent être mises en cause, on déplore un total manque d’émotion dans son interprétation ! On ne sait si c’est parce que son timbre de voix ne correspond pas au nouveau style du groupe ou bien parce qu’il n’en a rien à foutre, toujours est-il que les morceaux sont tous plus plats les uns que les autres. Seul “Stranded” ne s’en tire pas trop mal.
La production est extrêmement maladroite et le manque de moyens n’est pas en cause, ce sont les choix du producteur qui doivent être décriés : mettre le chant en avant ne donne pas plus de force à ce dernier ! Cela ne fait que renforcer son manque intérêt. Au final, le producteur a du s’en rendre compte et il a tenté de corriger le tir en saturant dès que possible la voix. Bref, du maquillage.
Cet album aurait dû s’appeler "Sign of Weakness" tant il déçoit, surtout venant d’un groupe qui avait pourtant les qualités de faire tellement mieux.
