Ils sont jeunes, ils sont quatre, ils sont belges et ils envoient du bois. BLACK MIRRORS est un quatuor bruxellois fondé en 2014 autour de la vocaliste Marcella Di Troia. La jeune femme ambitionnait de fonder un groupe exclusivement féminin pour lequel elle avait déjà trouvé une batteuse et une bassiste. C'est en rencontrant le guitariste Pierre Lateur qu'elle fait la première entorse à son projet initial. Et vu comme Pierre se débrouille avec un manche entre les pattes, on ne va pas regretter le renoncement de Marcella. D'ailleurs, par la suite, la bassiste et la batteuse sont remplacées par deux autres garçons, Gino Caponi à la basse et Edouard à la batterie (remplacé depuis septembre 2015 par Nicolas Scalliet).
J'entends déjà les grincheux accueillir avec circonspection une nouvelle galette de Stoner à chanteuse. Ceux qui trouvent que seul un organe masculin rugueux convient à ces mélodies grasses et saturées auraient tort de se complaire dans cette position un rien phallocrate. Car BLACK MIRRORS, c'est un peu comme le BLUES PILLS des débuts. Une musique inspirée, une guitare bouillante de virtuosité qui se permet quelques envolées psychédéliques mais se contente la plupart du temps de soutenir le chant de sa vocaliste. La rythmique n'est pas en reste avec une batterie nerveuse et une basse bien grasse assez présente dans le mix. Tous ces ingrédients livrent des mélodies un rien jazzy, un rien bluesy mais 100% groove et coolitude.
La seule chose qu'on pourrait regretter à l'écoute de l'EP, c'est sa brieveté. Cinq petites chansons taillées comme des diamants pour seulement 18 minutes de plaisir. Black Mirrors propose des expériences variées, mais plutôt dans la fraîcheur, la sincérité et la pêche. Difficile de situer la musique du gang. Des influences Hard Rock seventies pour la rythmique, une pointe de Desert Rock pour le son poussiéreux et sableux.
Il y a des mélodies très seventies comme "The Mess" ou "Make The Same Old Day" et sa très belle partition de basse. D'autres plus modernes, avec une touche de RADIOHEAD et un soupçon de THE CURE ("Something"). Le chant de Marcella Di Troia vient compléter ce bel ensemble avec une voix maîtrisée, émouvante, dans un registre comparable à celui de Janis Joplin. Le travail des musiciens est mis en valeur par une prod respectueuse et juste.
BLACK MIRRORS ? Un jeune groupe qui allie originalité, créativité, maîtrise et dont j'attends le prochain méfait avec impatience (il est attendu début 2016).
