Croyez-moi sur parole, si EVERY WORD A PROPHECY n’avait pas revendiqué haut et fort les influences progressives de son Deathcore, je ne me serais jamais intéressé à son cas. Mais puisque je suis partisan d’une certaine cohérence et que la première partie de leur diptyque, l’EP Past, Present And Futuristic Realizations, a fait l’objet d’un récent papier, autant aller jusqu’au bout et envisager avec encore plus de sérénité la perte d’un groupe dont personne ne se souviendra. Ces deux efforts, espacés dans le temps par seulement quelques mois et précédés par un autre EP (Solace Of Earth) en 2009 auront finalement eu raison de leur existence. A part l’inévitable compte officiel Facebook censé tenir la horde de fans en délire au courant de leur actualité fantôme, on a perdu tout signal radiophonique avec ces charmants Tennesséens. De lugubres murmures suggèrent qu’un premier album est en préparation. Mais est-ce vraiment bien raisonnable ?
Parce qu’au final, c’est vrai, on s’en passerait bien. Ces deux galettes, de par leur promiscuité, sous-entendent déjà l’éventualité que ce diptyque est un album scindé en deux parties distinctes. Et si j’ai donné sa chance au track-by-track sur Past, Present And Futuristic Realizations, soyez surs que pour un tel résultat, l’effort n’en vaut pas la peine. Je me contenterais donc, bien malgré moi, d’une analyse pertinente mais distante. Je n’avais déjà pas bien compris à quel niveau se situaient exactement les effluves « progressives » de leur Deathcore. Rebelote ici. A part une introduction aussi mélodieuse que vaporeuse qui ne fait pas un effet désagréable (« The Intertwining Conspiracies »), on se retrouve pris au piège par des guitares légèrement anticonformistes et des structures hasardeuses. Il y a bien quelques réverbérations et autres arrangements technico-mathématiques. De là à dire qu’ils sont suffisamment complexes et tordus pour valider leur thèse, il y a un monde. Marchant dans les cendres encore fumantes de son grand-frère, Reconstructing Existence fait mine de chasser le naturel coreux de ses créateurs. Mais vous connaissez le proverbe. L’absence étonnante des breakdowns, des grosses voix, des accélérations soudaines et titubantes, des rythmiques modernes et ciselées n’est pas bien longue. D’ailleurs, le lien noué entre les deux EP est d’une incroyable solidité. Il porte même un nom, le bougre. Médiocrité. Médiocrité dans le songwriting, médiocrité dans l’exécution, médiocrité dans la créativité, un comble pour une formation de Deathcore progressif ! En définitive, on a beau chercher, à part cette ouverture qui, je le répète, est très rafraichissante et un « The Synopsis » tantôt lourd et frénétique, tantôt groovy, il n’y a rien de plus à retenir de cette sortie. Pas plus en tout cas que sur Past, Present And Futuristic Realizations, ce qui justifie la note accordée. Le gros défaut d’EVERY WORD A PROPHECY était censé être sa plus grande qualité. Mais ce groupe n’a d’expérimental que la dénomination. Ce qui fait qu’au fond, il y a tromperie sur la marchandise.
En même temps, ce n’est pas une surprise. Pouvait-on très sincèrement espérer que ce deuxième volet, sorti juste derrière le premier, ait eu le temps de voir la Vierge Marie et de se repentir auprès d’elle ? Vaste fumisterie. Plus que son passage éclair dans le circuit entre 2009 et 2010, on retiendra finalement d’EVERY WORD A PROPHECY son incapacité à tenir ses engagements et le silence qu’ils font régner depuis bientôt trois ans. En somme, un bien triste constat.
